Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- "The House That Mike Built" is still Mike's house. Michael Jordan made another triumphant return to the United Center, receiving a long ovation and leading the Washington Wizards to an easy 107-82 victory over his former team, the Chicago Bulls. "It was very gratifying," Jordan said. "These people helped me grow. Playing in front of them is special. I can't say thanks enough." "It was awesome," said Wizards coach Doug Collins, who also coached Jordan in Chicago in the 1980s. "It was so great to see the fans have a chance to say thanks." In 30 minutes, Jordan scored 10 points on 4-of-11 shooting. He added five rebounds and five assists before taking a seat early in the fourth quarter. By that time, the outcome was well in hand. Jerry Stackhouse scored 28 points and Kwame Brown added 20 and 12 rebounds for the Wizards, who have won three of four following a three-game skid. Jordan led the Bulls to six championships in the 1990s. During that stretch, the Bulls and the city razed ancient Chicago Stadium and built the United Center, a glistening facility dubbed "The House That Mike Built." Last season, Jordan, 39, returned to Chicago for the first time as an opposing player. He missed Washington's second visit due to injury and is scheduled to return here for the final time on January 24, having announced that this season will be his last. Jordan was the last Wizard introduced and the calling of his name was greeted with a standing ovation lasting more than two minutes. He tried to control his emotions as he stood on the court surrounded by teammates, some of whom were clapping as well. "The guys were waiting for me to cry during that ovation," Jordan said. "I'm not going to. It's tough, but there's a game to be played. It was truly an appreciation coming from the fans. I can't imagine what it will be like for the last time." "It was nice to see," Brown said. "You can tell the people still really appreciate him and what he did here." The ovation might have gone on much longer had the Bulls not dimmed the lights to start the introductions for the home team. That was immediately met with loud booing from the sellout crowd of 23,049. "Anytime I step in this building, it's tough to see me not in red and white," Jordan said. "It's like we were in awe and we didn't play basketball," Bulls rookie Jay Williams said. "We didn't have a crowd because the crowd was for them and they were booing us. It was totally different." Jordan made his first shot, bringing cheers and getting the Wizards off to a quick start. He added another jumper in an 11-2 run that gave Washington the lead for good at 22-13. The Bulls still were within 36-27 early in the second quarter before Jordan returned to make a 17-footer between jumpers by Tyronn Lue. Lue added two more baskets to help push the lead to 49-31 with 3:36 left. A jumper by Jordan beat the halftime buzzer and gave the Wizards a 55-37 lead. He added just two free throws in the third quarter but continued to harass Jalen Rose as Washington opened a 31-point lead. "It was a challenge," Jordan said. "He loves to challenge me and I love to challenge him. We got to a point where I was not going to let him score. I didn't want him to even touch the ball." "Michael is a good defender," Bulls coach Bill Cartwright said. "He is still a good player." Rose made just 10-of-25 shots and scored 26 points, many of them coming after Jordan sat down. Marcus Fizer added 12 points for the Bulls, who shot just 36 percent (33-of-91) and could not build on Tuesday's solid win over Portland. "We were not ready for the opportunity to play a big-time game at a big-time moment," Rose said. "Michael Jordan's return, a national TV game. I think we were in awe of the entire thing as opposed to going out and doing what we can to play and compete to win." Lue scored 14 points and Larry Hughes added 11, six assists and six rebounds for the Wizards, who shot 53 percent (38-of-72) and held a massive 53-32 edge on the boards. The Bulls have lost four of five after winning four of five.
