Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- The Dallas Mavericks nearly gave away another big lead before being rescued by Michael Finley. Finley's three-point play ended a drought of nearly four minutes and helped lift the Mavericks to a 102-92 victory over the struggling Los Angeles Clippers. The Mavs were coming off just their second home loss of the season, a 110-107 setback to Milwaukee. In that game, Dallas blew a 17-point second-quarter lead and faltered down the stretch. "We cannot let that happen and let teams hang around," All-Star forward Dirk Nowitzki said. "We saw against Milwaukee, we were up 15 or 16 and the next thing you know, we lose the game. It's too dangerous in the NBA to let teams hang around. We've just got to do a better job and quit giving up leads and we'll be in good shape." On Thursday, the Mavs held an 88-69 lead with 7:10 remaining before the Clippers ran off 11 straight points, moving within 88-80 on a basket by Andre Miller with 5:02 to go. "In the second half, I think we got comfortable with our lead," Finley said. "As a result, we let them get their confidence back and they made it more of a ballgame than it should have been." Los Angeles had a chance to get closer but missed four straight shots. Finley finally ended the 3:45 dry spell, driving for a hoop and drawing a foul from Lamar Odom. His free throw made it 91-80 with 3:35 to play. "We were tired and couldn't get anything going to the basket," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "I thought we had three or four occasions in which we bailed out with a jump shot as opposed to taking it where we need it. I had to go to my open offense, which almost demands a drive somewhere." Steve Nash scored 24 points and Finley and Nowitzki added 20 apiece for Dallas, which has won 15 of its last 17 meetings with Los Angeles. "It feels like a loss," Nash said. "All of a sudden, they started to get open shots and all of the energy just went back a little bit," Nowitzki said. "We've just got to put 48 minutes together to beat the good teams. That's what we haven't been doing lately." Odom had 20 points and nine rebounds and Corey Maggette added 17 and eight for the Clippers, who have lost four in a row and six of seven. "You get down against a team like this, they score the ball well," Odom said. "We aren't scoring well enough." The Mavericks never trailed, scoring the first seven points. Nash scored eight points in the first quarter as Dallas grabbed a 23-12 lead. "We started the game tonight, they doubled our big guys, our big guys threw it out, we had wide open shots and we can't get them in the basket," Clippers coach Alvin Gentry said. "It sounds like a broken record for the last couple of weeks, but that is where we are. We are not making perimeter shots." A tip-in by Shawn Bradley gave the Mavs a 40-20 lead with 5:06 left in the second quarter. They settled for a 47-31 halftime bulge. A layup by Raef LaFrentz gave Dallas its largest lead at 73-49 with 3:20 to play in the third quarter. "You can't get behind to a team like that and expect to win," said Clippers forward Elton Brand, who had 13 points and 13 rebounds. "But we knew that if we kept fighting, we could get back in the game." Bradley scored 13 points for Dallas, which shot 43 percent (38-of-89), including just 1-of-11 from the arc. Bradley, Nowitzki and LaFrentz blocked three shots each. Quentin Richardson scored 14 points and Miller added 10 and seven assists for LA, which held a 56-44 rebounding advantage.
