Game Story

NEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- Tracy McGrady scored 40 points but could not lead the Orlando Magic to victory without Grant Hill. Hill sat out for the eighth time this season with a lingering left ankle problem and the Magic fell to the New Orleans Hornets, 100-89. McGrady scored 11 of his points in the first quarter as the Magic built an 11-point lead but slumped to six in the second as Orlando began to wilt. "We were right there," McGrady said. "We came out at the start of the game with high intensity on both ends of the court. Then, the second unit came in and our intensity went down. We lost the lead and we were playing catch-up the rest of the game." Forward Jamal Mashburn picked up the passing slack for injured point guard Baron Davis and helped the Hornets snap a five-game losing streak. "(Ball movement) is what we've been emphasizing," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "We have to execute better, especially since we are shorthanded. ... In the stretch that we had all of the losses, we were right there in every game and one play here or there would have gotten us more wins." Mashburn had three of his nine assists and five of his 29 points in the second quarter as New Orleans stormed back to take a 46-42 lead at halftime. The Hornets never trailed again and increased their lead to as many as 14 points. Mashburn led four Hornets in double figures. P.J. Brown added 18 points. "The ball was moving around nicely and I felt that each shot I was taking, the ball was going to go in," Brown said. McGrady was part of no such team effort as Orlando's next highest scorer was Mike Miller, who collected 13 points. The Magic are just 6-6 when either McGrady or Hill doesn't play. They lost for the first time in five games this season when McGrady, the NBA's leading scorer, topped the 40-point mark. "The 40 points was a typical night for me," McGrady said. "But numbers don't matter to me. It's about winning. Forty looks nice, but look who won the game. Who cares about 40 points when you don't win?"
