Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Tony Parker and Emanuel Ginobili added a foreign flavor to the woes of the Los Angeles Clippers. Parker scored 11 of his 26 points in the fourth quarter and Ginobili made several key plays down the stretch as the San Antonio Spurs handed the careening Clippers their season-high sixth straight loss, 94-86. Parker, a second-year point guard from France, picked up the offensive slack late in the game as the Clippers keyed on superstar Tim Duncan. He had eight free throws and a critical 3-pointer to turn back a rally. "I thought he was really special tonight," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "That's what we really want out of him. Even though he's so young, he continues to grow as a leader. He gets us in situations they want to be in." "I don't need to score on this team. We have scorers," Parker said. "But sometimes, it falls in my hands and I fell confident that I can score, too." Ginobili, a rookie from Argentina, did not play until coming on late in the third quarter. Still getting his legs under him after coming off the injured list less than a week ago, he had two flying dunks in the final two minutes to help seal the win. "He looked fantastic," Popovich said. "I thought he really energized our group with his competitive play." "I feel much better," said Ginobili, who missed 11 games with a sprained ankle. "I am happy because I am back on the court and played important minutes. Coming back and being able to hustle after a month was a big thing." Duncan had his usual stellar game for the Spurs, collecting 24 points, 14 rebounds, six assists and five blocks. He did not score in the final nine minutes but was not needed as Parker and Ginobili handled things. It all added up to another loss for the Clippers, who continue to shoot poorly, fall behind early and attempt futile comebacks as their season slips away. They fell to 12-22 and are in last place in the Pacific Division. Lamar Odom had 22 points and 11 rebounds and Corey Maggette scored 19 points for the Clippers, who shot under 34 percent (29-of-86) and got just six points from their bench. "It's very simple - we can't win the game shooting 33 percent," Clippers coach Alvin Gentry said. "We're not finishing plays," Odom said. "I can think of four or five layups that I missed today." Duncan scored 10 points in the first half and 12 more in the third quarter, including a pair of free throws that gave the Spurs the lead for good at 46-44 with 7:51 left. Consecutive 3-pointers by Bruce Bowen pushed the advantage to 54-47 with 5:23 to go. San Antonio took a 67-62 lead into the final period. Two free throws by Parker built a 79-70 bulge with 5:22 remaining, but after a dry spell for both teams, Odom tipped in his own miss and Michael Olowokandi hit a short jumper to make it 79-74 with 2:43 left. Parker answered with a 3-pointer. Andre Miller drilled a 3-pointer at the other end, but Ginobili took a handoff from Duncan and drove for a soaring baseline dunk and an 84-77 lead with 1:50 to play. "I really feel I need to keep my teammates in the game," Parker said. Olowokandi and David Robinson exchanged a pair of free throws before Parker sank 6-of-8 from the line in the final 82 seconds. Ginobili added another dunk as the Spurs easily broke a full-court press by the Clippers. "It's kind of hard to step into this game after being away for a month," Ginobili said. Bowen scored 13 points and Stephen Jackson added 12 for the Spurs, who shot 43 percent (34-of-79) and made 23-of-27 foul shots. Elton Brand had 15 points and 16 rebounds and Olowokandi and Miller scored 12 points apiece for the Clippers, who fell to 1-2 vs. the Spurs this season.
