Game Story

TORONTO (Ticker) -- All the New Orleans Hornets had to do was wait for the Toronto Raptors to collapse down the stretch. Jamal Mashburn led six players in double figures with 22 points as the Hornets handed the Raptors their season-high 10th straight loss, 99-84. Morris Peterson's 3-pointer from the left side with 8:37 remaining sliced Toronto's deficit to 81-79. But the Raptors missed their final nine shots and completely fell apart when Peterson fouled out with 4:22 remaining. Sunday was one of few games during the slide that Toronto had a chance to take a fourth-quarter lead. In the first nine games, its average margin of defeat had been 11.5 points. Peterson had scored eight straight Toronto points before his team collapsed and finished with 17 points. "We were giving him (Peterson) too much air space and he was coming off a low screen," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "Once we made a change defensively, we shut that off, and then Augmon went to work on him." With Augmon guarding him, Peterson missed two shots before fouling out. "I think that we were not able to knock down shots down the stretch and they were able to execute their offense," Raptors forward Jerome Williams said. "At the end of the game it gets real tough with everybody we had out there on the floor. When one guy is off, it just escalates and everybody is off. It takes a toll when you lose a lot of games." New Orleans held an 87-82 advantage when Peterson departed. Without him, the Raptors were outscored 12-2 down the stretch and suffered their seventh straight home defeat. Augmon started the decisive run with a layup and fadeaway shot over rookie forward Chris Jefferies, increasing the lead to 91-82 with 3:14 left. Jefferies was also victimized when Mashburn finished off the Raptors 58 seconds later with his only 3-pointer of the game and added a turnaround jumper at the 1:35 mark before P.J. Brown hit two free throws with 61 seconds to go. "They're not a very big team and I think that hurt them down the stretch," Mashburn said. "They don't have a lot of big guys that can block shots and go get rebounds and that makes it tough for them, especially down the stretch. They're a jump-shooting team and I think that hurt them tonight." "It seems to be the story of our life right now," Jefferies said. "We did some good things, but down the stretch we got a little tired. The last shot Mashburn shot on me, I thought I played great defense, but he made it." Toronto shot a respectable 46 percent (26-of-56) through three quarters, but just 25 percent (4-of-12) over the final 12 minutes. All five New Orleans starters reached double figures through three quarters as it nursed a 75-71 lead. The Hornets never led by more than six points and never let the Raptors grab control. The Raptors tied the contest three times and were within two on numerous occasions. Greg Foster's short jumper forged the last tie for Toronto at 70-70 with 2:05 remaining. But David Wesley answered with a 3-pointer on the Hornets' next trip and Jefferies missed a 3-pointer from the right side. Earlier, Jefferies' 3-pointer had cut the deficit to 70-68 with 3:04 to go. But Lindsay Hunter missed a chance to tie and Foster's shot could have given Toronto its first lead since late in the first half. While the Raptors were faltering, the Hornets had one of their best all-around offensive games as six players reached double figures. Wesley added 20, Brown collected 16 and 10 rebounds, Jamaal Magloire and Augmon finished with 11 apiece, while Courtney Alexander started in place of Baron Davis (back) and scored 10 points. "I think we moved the ball really well tonight and executed our offense really well," Wesley said. "We got a lot of contributions from a lot of people. A lot of people stepped up and made big baskets." Peterson was one of five Raptors to score in double figures. Antonio Davis scored 15, Jelani McCoy and Jefferies added 11 apiece and Alvin Williams chipped in 10.
