Game Story

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- The Memphis Grizzlies are getting a little better at holding on to 30-point leads. Jason Williams had 28 points and 14 assists and made two clutch jumpers down the stretch as the Grizzlies nearly blew a 31-point advantage before holding on for a 106-102 victory over the shorthanded New Orleans Hornets. The Grizzlies have won their last two games, squandering 30-point leads in each. On Friday, they wasted a 32-point lead and fell behind the Los Angeles Clippers in the fourth quarter before recovering to win. This one was practically a carbon copy. "I looked at their game against the Clippers the other night, when the Clippers were down by 32 and came back and went ahead, so I knew they'd give it up," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. Williams helped Memphis race to a 58-36 lead at halftime and the bulge widened to 76-45 midway through the third quarter. But the Grizzlies relaxed and the Hornets rallied, pulling within 97-96 on a flying jumper by Courtney Alexander with 2:51 to play. "We always felt like we could get back in this game," said Hornets guard David Wesley, who scored 18 points. "I never felt like we were done." "I tell people all the time that it might be safer to have a five- to 10-point lead as opposed to a 30-point lead," Williams said. "I don't care who you are, you are going to relax. We just have to play through it and overcome it." Williams buried a mid-range jumper, and after Robert Traylor split a pair of free throws, Williams went above a screen to sink a 21-footer for a 101-97 lead with 2:14 remaining. "I feel like my shot's going to go in every time I shoot it," said Williams, who made 10-of-17 shots. "I've got to take my time and take good shots and not rush things." Pau Gasol made a pair of free throws to push the lead to six points with 38 seconds to go. David Wesley made a driving layup, but Williams sealed it with two foul shots with 23 seconds left. Gasol scored 24 points and Lorenzen Wright added 20 and 14 rebounds for the Grizzlies, who are 11-9 since an 0-13 start. Afterward, they were able to joke about blowing the lead. "It's nice to get up big. We are not really used to that," forward Shane Battier said. "It's a good problem to have, trying to hold the lead." "When a team is down 30 points and has good players like the New Orleans Hornets do, it's kind of hard to guard them because you never know where the shots are going to come from," Wright said. "We were able to hold our composure, though, and still win the game." Jamal Mashburn had 30 points and 11 assists for the Hornets, who had a two-game winning streak snapped and have lost six of their last eight games. They again played without All-Star point guard Baron Davis, who remains sidelined with back trouble. The Grizzlies never trailed, jumping to a 30-24 lead after one quarter as Williams and Gasol scored 10 points apiece. A free throw by Traylor made it 32-27 with 9:19 left in the second quarter before Memphis scored 25 of the next 34 points. Gasol and Wright each scored six points in the surge before Williams hit 3-pointers on consecutive possessions to close the half and give the Grizzlies a 22-point cushion. "We were late to everything, we were slow to everything," Wesley said. "We just didn't have it. It was one of those situations where they hit every shot, and when they didn't hit them, they got the rebound." Battier's 3-pointer with just under seven minutes left in the third quarter gave the Grizzlies their largest lead before the Hornets came storming back. They used a 23-6 run to pull within 82-68 after three quarters, then opened the fourth period with a 14-5 spurt. Both surges featured 3-pointers from both Wesley and Mashburn. "We had a chance to end the game in the third period and we didn't," Battier said. "It gave them a lot of confidence coming into the fourth quarter. It's just a matter of sticking to our game plan." Battier had 13 points and eight rebounds for the Grizzlies, who shot 51 percent (39-of-77) and held a 44-39 edge on the boards. Memphis overcame 18 turnovers. Traylor had 10 points and 10 rebounds and Alexander scored 10 points for the Hornets, who shot 44 percent (40-of-90). The Grizzlies have won three of the last five meetings after losing the first eight.
