Game Story

NEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- Chauncey Billups once again stepped up in overtime for the Detroit Pistons. Billups scored a season-high 32 points and hit two free throws to snap a tie with just 1.6 seconds left in overtime as the Pistons rallied for a 101-99 triumph over the New Orleans Hornets. Billups tallied eight points in overtime. He nailed two of his season-high six 3-pointers and drew a foul late as the Pistons' winning streak grew to four games despite the absence of defensive demon Ben Wallace due to a sprained right ankle. "When a player just simply rises up and hits a shot like that, it's a breathtaking thing to watch," Pistons coach Rick Carlisle said of Billups. "He's made clutch shots and clutch plays all year long. He made a string of them tonight. His performance was phenomenal." Without Wallace - the NBA's leading rebounder - on the court for Detroit, New Orleans enjoyed a 51-26 advantage off the glass. As a result, Detroit had not led since the opening minute and trailed by as many as 16 points. But after Chucky Atkins tied it with two free throws, Billups' layup gave the Pistons an 88-86 lead with eight seconds left in regulation. Jamal Mashburn fell just one assist shy of a triple-double, collecting 26 points, 15 rebounds and nine assists. He converted a pair of free throws to force overtime and tried to carry New Orleans to a win, netting six points in the extra session. "We were trying to run our offense (in overtime) and do a lot of different things to get me the ball," Mashburn said. "It's tough, but I'll take zero points (in exchange) for a win." Playing without All-Star Baron Davis for the fifth straight game due to back spasms, the Hornets lost their third in a row and 11th in 14 contests. For the second straight game, Billups soared in overtime for Detroit. On Wednesday, Philadelphia superstar Allen Iverson fouled out as Billups drilled a 3-pointer to open overtime, giving the Pistons the lead for good in a 103-94 victory. "We've had a lot of close games," Billups said. "This is the kind of win that's going to build a lot of character for our team. I mean, we get outrebounded (by) 25 and still have a chance to win and pull it out at the end." Masburn scored New Orleans' first six points in overtime, hitting two jumpers and a pair from the line to make it 94-91 with 1:52 to play. Billups then hit from 24 feet away to knot the contest. After a layup by Hornets forward P.J. Brown, the seventh-year guard made another shot from the arc and gave the Pistons a 97-96 edge with only 57 seconds left. "I was feeling it. I got it up there, it felt good and it went down," Billups said. "If I wasn't shooting the ball well, no way would I have shot those shots. But when you're feeling it, you take chances like that. It was good for us tonight." "We just couldn't find a way to to slow them down at the end," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "They really played pretty good without one of their big guns. We played as well as we could play." Starting at point guard in place of Davis, David Wesley hit New Orleans' lone 3-pointer with 8.1 seconds remaining to tie it again, 99-99. Off the ensuing timeout, Billups was struggling to create an opening. He faked a shot, got Jerome Moiso to leave his feet and drew the foul. "I've got to be smart on that play," Moiso said. "I knew (Billups) had the hot hand. He had a step on me. He used a veteran trick on me and I fell for it." The Hornets were down by two when Mashburn's potential game-winning 3-pointer bounced off the rim. "I got a good look at the basket," Mashburn said. "It was as good a look as I was going to get with 1.6 seconds on the clock. I got it up, it felt pretty good, but you can't answer your prayers all the time."
