Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Rookie Amare Stoudemire had another big game for the Phoenix Suns, which meant another road loss for the Memphis Grizzlies. Stoudemire had 16 points and a team rookie-record 21 rebounds, and the Suns maintained control in the fourth quarter for a 96-90 victory over the Grizzlies, whose road woes continued. Stoudemire, among the leading candidates for Rookie of the Year, had just two points and two boards in a 102-94 loss at Memphis on December 8. But in the two meetings between the clubs in Phoenix, he is averaging 15.5 points and 18 rebounds. "I am a rebounding kind of guy," Stoudemire said. "I like to get a lot of rebounds. My points are going to come just by outrunning the big guys down the court." "I was motivated but I wasn't thinking about the last time we played Memphis. I was thinking about Utah and how they outrebounded us by 21." Stoudemire helped Phoenix to a 52-31 advantage on the glass, including 23-9 on the offensive end. He had eight offensive boards and Scott Williams grabbed six as the Suns enjoyed a 29-16 edge in second-chance points. "Amare was a monster tonight," Grizzlies coach Hubie Brown said. "He made so many things happen for other guys by sacrificing his body." "We were really struggling to rebound the ball, as you know, the last few games and he stepped up. He stepped up big," Suns coach Frank Johnson said. Stoudemire's rebounds were the most by a Sun since A.C. Green had 20 vs. the Los Angeles Clippers on January 9, 1996. Alvan Adams held the old rookie record with 19 at Chicago on February 17, 1976. "I guess it was kind of going my way on the boards," Stoudemire said. "I thought maybe I had 12. I didn't realize until my little brother came up and told me I had 21." Stephon Marbury had 25 points and 11 assists and Shawn Marion scored 20 points for Phoenix, which has won nine straight home games and 13 of 17 overall. The Suns are 25-5 all-time against the Grizzlies. Pau Gasol collected 22 points and 11 boards for Memphis, which fell to 0-2 on a critical six-game road trip. The Grizzlies are a league-worst 1-15 on the road, with their only win coming December 10 at lowly Miami. "We need to do something to win games on the road," Grizzlies forward Shane Battier said. "It is high time we started to win some games on the road." The teams were tied, 46-46, at halftime. Memphis built a four-point lead late in the third quarter, when Gasol scored 11 points. But a 3-pointer by rookie Casey Jacobsen gave Phoenix the lead for good at 68-67 entering the final period. Marion opened the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer that beat the shot clock and a breakaway dunk that widened the advantage to six points. An offensive rebound by Stoudemire led to a three-point play by Marbury that pushed the margin to 88-80 with 3:06 to go. "We came out with more energy in the second half and that's what we needed," Marion said. A basket by Lorenzen Wright and a 3-pointer by rookie Gordan Giricek made it 88-85 with 1:46 to play. But baskets by Williams and Marbury rebuilt the lead to seven points with just over a minute left. Williams had 10 points and eight boards for the Suns, who shot 42 percent (37-of-88) from the field. Phoenix played without guard Penny Hardaway, who will have surgery Saturday to repair torn thumb ligaments and will be sidelined six to eight weeks. Jason Williams scored 15 points and Giricek added 13 for the Grizzlies, who shot 46 percent (38-of-82). "Usually we fall behind early and claw our way back, but we played a pretty good game tonight," said Battier, who scored 10 points. "We need to make big stops and get key offensive rebounds and didn't do it."
