Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Chauncey Billups scored 26 points but committed a key blunder as the Detroit Pistons had a four-game winning streak stopped by the Milwaukee Bucks, 89-87. After Ray Allen missed a potential clinching layup, Billups grabbed the rebound with 3.4 seconds left. But he started to dribble and let 1 1/2 seconds tick off before calling timeout, depriving the Pistons of a chance to inbound from halfcourt. They did not get off a shot on the ensuing possession. "We tried to make a run late in the game and just couldn't pull this one out," Billups said. "We have to put this game behind us. We will go out on the road and get back to the way that we play basketball. This is a game that we thought we should have won. It is going to leave a nasty taste in our mouth." Milwaukee led from the outset, scoring the game's first eight points. Allen had 12 of his 28 in the first half, when the Bucks led by as many as 16 points. "It was a tough game," Pistons coach Rick Carlisle said. "We just couldn't get anything sustained tonight." Detroit spent the second half chipping away as Jon Barry scored all of his 14 points in the fourth quarter, including two free throws with 3:39 left that got the Pistons within 82-81. But Anthony Mason converted a three-point play and the Pistons never had a chance to grab the lead. "It's very seldom that you go the whole game with the lead," Bucks coach George Karl said. "We were fatigued a little bit and kept fouling them in the fourth quarter, but fortunately, we hung on enough to make enough plays. We had a solid game the whole night. Defensively, we were solid. There were only a few breakdowns defensively in a couple of situations. It's a big win." The Bucks won for the third time in four games and have taken two of three from the Pistons this season. "We're taking small, little steps in the right direction," Allen said. "Defensively, we've put together some good basketball. We just have to iron out our offense. We get a little stagnant offensively." Milwaukee played without point guard Sam Cassell, who is suffering from back spasms. Detroit forward Ben Wallace missed the game with a sprained ankle. "We didn't really care if (Wallace) played tonight," said Bucks center Jason Caffey, who had 13 points and four rebounds. "He's a helluva rebounder and he needs to be on (the Pistons). They're not one of the best rebounding teams. We were going to scrap it up and go at those guys, regardless of who they had." Milwaukee outrebounded Detroit, 39-26. "I think Ben was pretty well missed," Barry said. "We're getting ripped on the boards and that's tough to overcome." The Bucks used only seven players but shot 47 percent (33-of-70) and made 7-of-14 3-pointers. The Pistons hit under 44 percent (28-of-64) and were 7-of-18 from 3-point range.
