Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- A more experienced team might have put away the game earlier, but the Indiana Pacers needed Jermaine O'Neal to make big shots down the stretch. O'Neal scored 23 points and made two huge baskets in the final 90 seconds as the Pacers held on for their ninth straight home victory, 116-104 over the Golden State Warriors. Indiana is one of the deepest and most talented teams in the league but also one of the youngest. The Pacers displayed that inexperience with their inability to pull away from the Warriors in the second half. Indiana squandered a 14-point lead in the third quarter and two 10-point cushions in the final nine minutes, only to see Golden State rally within four points on both occasions. "We were a bit tired, but I think we kept focused and really beared down in the second half," Indiana's Ron Artest said. "Every game seems like it's going down to the end. It's always going to be challenging. We're going to fight to the end, and it's a good sign we can pull these close ones out." "Every time we got close, it seemed like we got a foul or a call didn't go our way," Golden State guard Gilbert Arenas said. "We were right there all night. We hung with them but couldn't get over the hump." The Pacers had a 108-99 cushion with 3:27 to go when Brad Miller made two free throws following a flagrant foul on the Warriors' Troy Murphy. But Jason Richardson buried a 3-pointer and Adonal Foyle made a hook shot to bring Golden State within 108-104 at the 2:19 mark. O'Neal made a layup off an assist from Jamaal Tinsley with 1:25 to go and added a fallaway jumper 31 seconds later as Indiana scored the game's final eight points. "(The shots) were in the framework of the offense," O'Neal said. "We have a lot of options out there. Every possession is big. I'm thinking about positions and getting myself ready for a bucket." O'Neal made 11-of-19 shots and collected 12 rebounds and five blocks as the Pacers cruised to their eighth win in 10 games. Artest scored 21 of his 23 points in the first half and Reggie Miller finished with 21 for Indiana, which shot 53 percent (41-of-78) from the floor and made 7-of-14 3-pointers. Brad Miller had 15 points and Tinsley dished out 14 the Pacers' season-high 39 assists. They committed just 10 turnovers. Antawn Jamison scored 33 points and Murphy collected 14 and 13 rebounds as the Warriors lost for just the third time in nine games. "(The Pacers) have as many weapons as any team," Warriors coach Eric Musselman said. "I think we competed. I'm certainly not disappointed. I think confidence is growing. We came into this building expecting to win, but close only counts in hand grenades and horseshoes, and we're not playing either one." Arenas had 15 points, Richardson 14 and Foyle added 10 off the bench for Golden State. The Pacers never trailed and took the lead for good on a 3-pointer by Artest less than three minutes into the game. They had their largest lead at 84-70 after Reggie Miller scored four points during a 10-0 run midway through the third quarter. The Warriors scored the final seven points of the period to pull within 89-83 heading to the fourth.
