Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Dirk Nowitzki is emerging as a leading MVP candidate, even if he doesn't think so. Nowitzki scored 10 of his 23 points in the final seven minutes as the Dallas Mavericks avoided looking ahead long enough to defeat the Los Angeles Clippers, 96-90, for their sixth straight win. This season, the 7-foot Nowitzki has been the best player on the NBA's best team. Down the stretch, he took control of the game and refused to allow the Mavericks to lose after they had blown a 13-point lead. "I've always said this team doesn't have an MVP," Nowitzki said. "We have so many guys who can take over and win games for us. Teams like us and Sacramento don't have MVPs; (we) have so many weapons and we're so deep. If you have to give an MVP award out to somebody, it's got to be probably a guy like Jason Kidd." "First half of the year, he's a candidate, because he's the best player on the best team" Clippers forward Lamar Odom said. "So you can put him down for MVP." Nowitzki made a jumper and beautiful driving reverse layup to keep things close. His 3-pointer gave Dallas the lead for good at 87-84 with 3:23 to play, and he added three free throws in the final 99 seconds. Steve Nash scored 24 points and Michael Finley added 21 for the Mavs, who have won five straight road games. On Wednesday, they visit Sacramento in a matchup of the best teams in the league. "It's going to be a great game," Nowitzki said. "They're at their place, they're a great home team, but I don't think we're afraid of anyone to play on the road. It should be a fantastic game." Elton Brand had 19 points and 12 rebounds and Corey Maggette added 18 and nine for the Clippers, who fell to 0-3 vs. the Mavs this season. They have lost 17 of the last 19 meetings. Nowitzki came in 11th in scoring at 22.6 points and sixth in rebounding at 10.3 per game. In his fourth season, the German sensation has the Mavericks on pace for 70 wins. "I don't make those claims or talk about those things," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "I don't know. Talk to the commissioner. Who votes - I don't know. ... He's the best player for me." "Most nights he is the best player on the court," Nash said. "No matter who we're playing, he's one of the top five players in the world to me. ... I think he is definitely an MVP candidate. Tremendous ability, tremendous focus and commitment. He does a lot for us." In this game, Nowitzki often was deployed as a small forward alongside fellow 7-footers Shawn Bradley and Raef LaFrentz. "We were able to do that because of Dirk playing as a 3," LaFrentz said. "That's three 7-footers in there and it can create matchup problems." "They're a great team," Clippers coach Alvin Gentry said. "They've got the best record in the NBA and they've got so many guys that are difficult to match up with." After a basket by Michael Olowokandi gave the Clippers an 80-77 lead with 8:02 to play, Nowitzki answered with a jumper just over a minute later. Olowokandi made a free throw before Nowitzki drove left underneath the hoop and spun in a layup on the other side to tie it with 5:57 remaining. After Odom's 3-pointer pulled LA into an 84-84 tie with 4:22 left, Finley ran down a loose ball and saved it to Nowitzki, who drilled his go-ahead 3-pointer. LaFrentz added a monstrous one-handed follow dunk on the next possession and Nash threw in a driving lefthanded scoop shot for a 91-84 lead with 2:12 to play. "We love close games," Nowitzki said. "We can battle in there, do our game, make shots, and in the end, we believe in ourselves." LaFrentz scored 10 points for the Mavs, who shot 45 percent (36-of-80) from the field. Nash had nine rebounds and six assists and Bradley had nine boards and five blocks. Odom scored 17 points, Keyon Dooling added 15 and Andre Miller 12 for the Clippers, who shot 44 percent (36-of-81) and held a 46-38 edge on the glass. Brand, Maggette and center Michael Olowokandi fouled out. LA fell to 8-13 at home. Prior to the national anthem, some of the 18,216 at the Staples Center chanted, "Fire Gentry!" Finley scored 18 points in the first half as Dallas grabbed a 49-44 lead. A lob from Nash was slammed home by Nowitzki, capping a 10-2 burst in just 45 seconds and giving the Mavs a 71-58 lead with 4:22 left in the third quarter. But Maggette answered with a thunderous dunk that triggered an 18-3 run. Baskets by Brand and Olowokandi started the fourth quarter and ended the run, giving the Clippers a 76-74 lead.
