Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- The first minute looked promising for the Los Angeles Clippers against the Minnesota Timberwolves. They had serious trouble in the remaining 47 minutes. Kevin Garnett scored 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds and Rasho Nesterovic added 12 and 10 as the Timberwolves handed the slumping Clippers an eighth loss in 10 games, 95-64. "All good teams are supposed to put their opponent away and do it consistently," Garnett said. "We're learning that." It was the fewest points allowed by the Timberwolves in franchise history - four fewer than the previous record established at Boston on March 24, 1999. "I have no clue what's wrong with us," said Clippers guard Quentin Richardson, who scored just three points on 1-of-8 shooting. "I'm discouraged. We just got blown out. I'm very frustrated. It was a very embarrassing game." It also was the second-worst offensive showing in franchise history for the Clippers. They scored 63 against Milwaukee on October 21, 1972, when they were known as the Buffalo Braves. "You can't win scoring 60-some points," Clippers forward Corey Maggette said. "It's been tough. I just want to win. We have to do something to get us back on the right track. Right now it isn't there and we have to forget all the negative things and think about something positive." Michael Olowokandi gave Los Angeles a 2-0 lead on a seven-foot turnaround jump shot 31 seconds into the contest, but Minnesota promptly scored the next 13 points, taking the lead for good on an 18-foot jumper by Garnett with 9:33 left in the quarter. "We weren't ready to play," said Clippers guard Andre Miller, who scored only two points on 1-of-6 shooting. "Teams jump on us early and we're fighting uphill the rest of the game." The Timberwolves led, 23-13, after one quarter and 48-33 at the half. Minnesota shot only 39 percent (19-of-49) in the first two quarters but limited Los Angeles to just 32 percent (12-of-38). "We came out aggressive in the beginning and established ourselves and then carried it through the game," Minnesota guard Rod Strickland said. "We do have to be a lot more consistent on the defensive end," Garnett said. "That was the difference tonight." Minnesota dominated inside, outrebounding Los Angeles, 56-44, and scoring more points in the paint, 42-24. "We had a great walk-through and great concentration," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. I thought we'd play well. We pretty much dictated the game from beginning to end." Maggette scored 20 points to pace the Clippers, who shot just 32 percent (24-of-75) and made just 13-of-24 free throws. "We need to try to get our minds right," Los Angeles center Sean Rooks said. "There are a lot of games left in the season and we have to get back into it."
