Game Story

NEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- The resurgence of the Los Angeles Lakers is getting much more attention than the collapse of the New Orleans Hornets. Kobe Bryant had 36 points and 11 rebounds and Shaquille O'Neal added 23 and 11 as the Lakers extended their season-high winning streak to five games with a 90-82 victory over the reeling Hornets. Los Angeles won just 10 of its first 28 games as many awaited the end of the NBA's latest dynasty. But the three-time defending champions have won seven of their last eight games and have solved their road woes, winning five of seven away from Staples Center. "We're executing better and we're hustling better," Bryant said. "We know we're playing with a better rhythm, we can feel it. We have a way to go to get good. It's a long season. That's why you have to be patient and work out the kinks on a daily basis." "I think it's just re-establishing ourselves as a team," Los Angeles coach Phil Jackson added. "To be able to pull things together as a team, there are some second-effort things that are helping us do that." The Hornets flourished early in their inaugural season in New Orleans, winning 15 of their opening 21 games, including their first 10 at home. But they have floundered since, losing 13 of 16 overall and six of their last seven at New Orleans Arena. "It's frustrating that we can't seem to get it going," Hornets forward Jamal Mashburn said. "At a certain point, we'll fix it. I'm going to stay positive and make sure everybody else in this locker room stays positive. It's a long year." The Hornets had a 79-77 lead with 6:59 remaining in a back-and-forth game before the Lakers pulled away with a 13-2 run. O'Neal, who scored 10 points in the fourth quarter, sparked the burst with a three-point play that gave Los Angeles the lead for good with 6:40 to go. He followed with a short jumper at the 5:03 mark. After New Orleans' David Wesley made 1-of-2 free throws, Robert Horry and O'Neal sank consecutive baskets for an 86-80 edge. Wesley again split a pair of free throws before Bryant made two from the line with 2:26 to go. Los Angeles sealed the win when Rick Fox threw an alley-oop to O'Neal for a 90-81 cushion with 62 seconds remaining. New Orleans managed just three points in the final 6:58 and missed their last 10 shots from the floor, going without a basket over the final 8:20. "In the fourth quarter, as things got more intense and more physical, we really locked in on the defensive end," Lakers guard Derek Fisher said. "That's the type of defense that wins championships." Horry finished with 10 points and seven rebounds for the Lakers, who shot just 41 percent (34-of-83) from the floor but held a 50-42 edge on the glass, including 17 offensive boards. The Hornets were not boosted by the return of Baron Davis, who scored 20 points after missing six games due to back spasms. "He's hurting some, but that's to be expected," New Orleans coach Paul Silas said. "I played him too many minutes, but we were really trying to win the game tonight. Hopefully, I can curtail some of those minutes the rest of the way." Mashburn added 19 points and P.J. Brown had 12 and 14 rebounds for the Hornets, who opened a season-high seven-game homestand. Wesley had 14 points and eight assists but made just 4-of-12 shots as New Orleans was held to 39 percent (29-of-74) from the floor. The Hornets led by as many as 10 points in the first quarter and carried a 29-23 cushion into the second. The Lakers scored nine of the first 11 points in the period and took a 32-31 edge on a turnaround shot by O'Neal less than four minutes in. Los Angeles led by as many 10 in the quarter and had a 49-48 advantage just 79 seconds into the second half. New Orleans responded with a 16-6 run and neither team led by more than five until the final minutes.
