Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- The Portland Trail Blazers can rest Bonzi Wells as long as possible if Rasheed Wallace plays like this. Wallace had a season-high 38 points and 10 rebounds as the red-hot Trail Blazers posted a 100-92 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies. Portland played its second straight game without Wells, who is second on the team in scoring and third in rebounding but is out with a sore left foot. Wallace more than picked up the slack by making 16-of-20 shots from the floor, including 3-of-5 3-pointers. "He looked like he was in that mode the whole game," Portland coach Maurice Cheeks said. "Not a lot of times would he say, 'Bring the ball to me.' Tonight was one of those nights where he wanted the ball in his hands and he delivered. He only missed four shots. He was aggressive the whole game." "We just kept pounding it in to him," Blazers forward Scottie Pippen said. "He was in a zone tonight. He kept his focus a lot, he was scoring the ball, and he was very patient in the post. He was making great moves and knocking down shots." Pippen added 18 points for the Blazers, who shot 56 percent (44-of-78) and won for the 13th time in 16 games. Portland led the entire fourth quarter but was clinging to an 80-77 edge with 10:06 left before pulling away with a 14-4 run. Wallace scored seven points during the burst, which gave the Blazers a 94-81 cushion with 4:20 to go. Wallace sparked the stretch with a 20-foot jumper and - after Damon Stoudamire made 1-of-2 free throws - buried a turnaround shot. "When you have a guy who was playing as well as Rasheed was tonight, you have to ride him," Portland guard Antonio Daniels said. "You have to ride the hot hand and if we wanted to get that victory, we needed to continue to get that ball to Sheed and play off of him." "When we'd get it to six or eight, (Wallace) would make a great shot in the paint," Memphis coach Hubie Brown said. "He played big. When you shoot 16-for-20, I don't care who you're playing. That's a big-time performance." Arvydas Sabonis had a layup and Wallace made a 3-pointer before Stoudamire and Derek Anderson capped the spurt with consecutive baskets to give the Blazers their largest lead. Memphis made just 6-of-22 shots in the fourth quarter and finished at 41 percent (35-of-86). "We had to come and play hard as we can and we didn't do a thing down the stretch to win the game," said Grizzlies forward Lorenzen Wright, who had eight points and eight rebounds. "That's why we ended up losing." Pau Gasol scored 19 points and Shane Battier added 17 for the Grizzlies, who fell to 1-4 on a season-high six-game road trip. Memphis is just 2-17 on the road this season, including 1-13 against Western Conference foes.
