Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- The Detroit Pistons were not caught looking ahead. In fact, they stared down the New York Knicks in the third quarter. Clifford Robinson scored 22 points and Richard Hamilton had six of his 16 points in a decisive 16-0 run in the third quarter as the Pistons coasted to a 99-82 victory. The Pistons (26-12) moved within two games of Central Division-leading Indiana and open a home-and-home series with the Pacers on Saturday night. Pistons coach Rick Carlisle refused to talk about the Pacers to either his team or the media Thursday, instead concentrating on the task at hand. "It was a good effort by our guys, obviously, a quality win. I think our team understood that we really had to play with a certain level of intensity to beat New York," Carlisle said. "Our effort was consistent all night long. We were able to do what we had to do to get a cushion and then pulled away. It's a great win for us and now we've got a couple more tough games coming up in a very short period of time." All Carlisle had to do was remind his team of a November 18 loss to the Knicks in which it fell behind by 30 points at halftime. It worked Friday as the Pistons put the game out of reach with a third-quarter run in which the Knicks went scoreless for a 5:53 span. The Knicks shot just 2-of-16 in the quarter and scored just 11 points. A pair of free throws by Charlie Ward with five seconds left in the period ended the spurt and cut the deficit to 80-55. "I didn't recognize our team tonight simply because we were lethargic, we didn't move quickly, we didn't get into guys and we had slow feet, and as a result of that we couldn't buy a basket on the other end of the floor," Knicks coach Don Chaney said. Hamilton and Robinson started the game-clinching run with baskets and Chauncey Billups hit a 3-pointer. Hamilton made it 73-53 with another basket and Billups and Robinson each made two free throws. Hamilton scored again and Corliss Williamson made one of two free throws to cap the run. With the game decided, both coaches substituted liberally in the fourth quarter. "The last couple games, we haven't played with the type of intensity on defense that you need at home to make teams understand that when they come on your home floor, it's going to be tough," Robinson said. Kurt Thomas and Shandon Anderson each scored 16 points for the Knicks, who received just 11 points from Latrell Sprewell on 4-of-12 shooting. "We just didn't get into a rhythm out there. Every time we tried to make a run, someone turned the ball over or missed a shot," said Thomas, who had just one point in the second half. "We were just not in sync. We just have to cool our heads and we have a game tomorrow night and we have to go out there and play well against Atlanta." The Knicks have lost six of their last eight games. Ben Wallace of the Pistons, played his third straight game after returning from an ankle injury, had two points and 11 rebounds. "It wasn't like we planned on coming out and going through the motions," Wallace said. "We've got to play every game hard from here on out. I think we came out and played hard and were able to take control of the game." The Pistons led by as many as 28 points in the fourth quarter, the last coming on a basket by former Knick Hubert Davis that made it 99-71 with 2:49 left. Detroit made 28-of-34 free throws, with Billups making 11-of-11. Neither team led by more than four points in the first quarter, which Detroit finished with a 27-25 lead. The Pistons led by as many as 10 points in the second quarter, taking a 37-27 advantage on a 16-foot jumper by Jon Barry. Robinson had 16 points in the first half to help the Pistons take a 52-44 halftime lead.
