Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Jason Kidd scored 10 of his 18 points in the second quarter as the New Jersey Nets had few problems dispatching the undermanned Toronto Raptors, 88-77. Kidd scored seven points during an 18-6 run that gave New Jersey a 40-28 lead with 5:59 left in the first half. The Nets led 51-40 at halftime and put away the game by scoring 16 of the first 24 points in the third quarter, including six more from Kidd. "I thought the first half, we played pretty well," Nets coach Byron Scott said. "But the third quarter, we played great." New Jersey led by as many as 30 points early in the fourth quarter before emptying its bench. "It was ugly out there," Raptors coach Lenny Wilkens said. Morris Peterson scored 20 points for Toronto, which dressed the league-minimum eight players for the third consecutive game. The Raptors' injury situation is so severe that forward Damone Brown, who joined Toronto on a 10-day contract on Tuesday, made his second consecutive start. "You feel sorry for the injuries they have and their star player (Vince Carter)," Kidd said. "But ... eight guys or 12 guys, games have to be played." Forward Art Long, another Raptor playing on a 10-day contract, scored 10 points. The Raptors committed 30 turnovers compared to 11 for the Nets. "I turned the ball over a lot," said Rafer Alston, who committed five turnovers and is also on a 10-day contract. "I felt I was out of my rhythm." Kerry Kittles, who is trying to work his way back into New Jersey's starting lineup after returning from a sprained left knee, scored 11 points on 4-of-9 shooting. He also tied a season high with four steals. "He's been doing that for us the last couple of games," said Nets forward Richard Jefferson, who had 15 points and eight rebounds. "It's just a matter of time before he starts doing it consistently." New Jersey also had an injury to deal with, as Rodney Rogers sat out with a strained left calf. Rogers' injury opened the door for seldom-used forward Brian Scalabrine to play a career-high 35 minutes. Scalabrine tied a season high with eight points. The Nets avoided losing back-to-back home games for the first time all season and left with a good feeling as they prepared for a five-game western road swing. "We didn't want to go out west with a two-game losing streak," said Nets forward Kenyon Martin, who had 13 points and eight rebounds. "So we had to get off the losing skid and did what we had to do." Toronto's 77 points were the fewest it has ever scored against New Jersey. The Raptors have lost five straight games at Continental Airlines Arena since their last victory here on November 5, 1999.
