Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- It took just over five minutes to determine the worst team in the NBA. Juwan Howard scored 25 points and Rodney White added a career-high 23 as the Denver Nuggets posted a 97-80 rout over the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Nuggets and Cavaliers came in with a combined 17-61 record and were the only teams yet to reach 10 wins. But in the opening moments of the second half, the Cavaliers established themselves as the inferior team, committing seven turnovers, which the Nuggets converted into several easy baskets. Overall, the Cavaliers (8-33) committed 30 turnovers, which were turned into 32 points as they moved three games in front of the Nuggets (10-29) for the NBA's worst record and possibly the top overall pick in the draft, which is expected to be high school sensation LeBron James. Howard's jumper with 9:37 remaining put the Nuggets ahead by double digits for good at 60-49. They turned a five-point halftime lead to a 71-49 bulge before Jumaine Jones' jumper with 6:40 to play ended the drought. "This was a good win for a basketball team that has been working really hard," first-year Nuggets coach Jeff Bzdelik said. "We need to show the fans and the media that we are getting better. We did not want to have what happened to us against Golden State (being up by 20 and losing)." Howard, who is Denver's most experienced player, converted a pair of three-point plays. Ryan Bowen added two layups and rookie Nene Hilario added three points and ended the run with a free throw. "They brought up their tempo and we came out really flat," Cavaliers rookie forward Carlos Boozer said. We cut it down a little at one point, but we just could not get back in it. They hit big shots and some of their shots hit right before the shot clock expired. You have to give them credit. They played really well tonight." Howard scored 10 points during the decisive period and White added nine as Denver shot 48 percent (10-of-21) and limited Cleveland to 23 percent (3-of-13) from the floor. The Nuggets never trailed by less than 12 points thereafter and opened their largest lead, 81-57, late in the period on White's jumper. Cleveland was within 89-77 at the 5:22 mark but went scoreless for the next 5:09. "This is one of those games that we needed to win," Howard added. "No disrespect to Cleveland. The fourth quarter they were trying to come back and they made a run, but we got the starters back in there at the start of the fourth and we were able to comeback with our run." Zydrunas Ilgauskas paced the Cavs with 26 points. Ricky Davis, who scored 27 in Cleveland's 111-104 home win over Denver on December 14, was held to 12. Until the Nuggets ran the Cavaliers out of the building, the contest actually was somewhat well-played. Cleveland shot 54.5 percent (18-of-33) while Denver clicked at 44 percent (22-of-50) in the first half. The Cavaliers had a pair of 6-0 runs in the first quarter, opening a 22-13 lead with 3:13 left. But Bowen converted two steals into layups and Howard added two baskets as the Nuggets closed out the quarter on a 12-1 run. The Nuggets got a lift before the game when they activated Marcus Camby from the injured list. But Camby sprained his right ankle just 15 seconds into the contest when he stepped on Ilgauskas' foot. Camby finished with five points in seven minutes as he played for the first time since February 1 at Indiana as a member of the New York Knicks. "There's always enough time," Camby said. "The record is not great, but once we get everybody back healthy, I think we should be a lot better club than what a lot of people expected of us."
