Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- After spending most of the night gathering in errant shots, Brian Grant gathered himself and came up with the game's biggest basket. Grant's basket off a near-perfect feed from Eddie Jones with seven seconds left in double overtime lifted the Miami Heat to a 102-101 triumph over the Chicago Bulls. Miami's sixth straight home win against Chicago was a wild affair that saw both teams fail to cash in on numerous chances to win. But Grant, who had a season-high 20 rebounds, came up with the pivotal shot. Sent to the line with the Heat trailing, 101-100, and 16 seconds left, Grant missed both free throws. Following his second miss, a wild scramble ensued and Jones ended up with ball. Playing for the first time in nine games, he found Grant in the paint for the go-ahead hoop. "It was a mad scramble and I got the ball," Jones said. "I saw Brian cutting to the rim. I took the ball to the middle so that I could draw two guys and I laid it off to him over the top and he finished the play for us." "I was really upset with myslef for missing those free throws," Grant said. "Chicago played their hearts out but we needed the victory bad." The Bulls called timeout, but Jalen Rose's 30th shot of the night was off the mark and Chicago dropped its 19th straight road game. The win was just the second in nine games for the Heat, who have won four of the last five meetings with the Bulls. "It was a wild game," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "It would have been a disheartening loss for either team. Fortunately, we made some great plays at the end. ... Getting the game-winner on a broken play makes up for a lot." "Whenever you have these types of games, you are always disappointed when you don't win," Bulls coach Bill Cartwright said. "I definitely have been on the winning side more than the losing, but I am happy with the way our guys competed." Miami led 79-72 following a short hook shot by Vladimir Stepania with 10:44 to go in the fourth quarter. But Marcus Fizer had a layup off a feed from Rose to send the Bulls on a 9-2 run. Donyell Marshall tied it with a free throw with 2:54 remaining and the teams traded empty possessions. But Miami's Malik Allen, who scored a career-high 23 points, had five straight for an 86-81 lead. "My teammates found me tonight," Allen said. "My man was slumping off, helping on Eddie Jones, so I was knocking down jump shots whenever possible." "Malik had a good night," Riley added. "He made some jumpers and good shots at the end. He did a good job." Cartwright called timeout and Chicago executed as Jamal Crawford buried a 3-pointer with 55 seconds left and Rose sank a 13-footer 26 seconds later. Grant had a chance to win it at the end of regulation but missed and Rose's hurried last-second attempt was off the mark. Miami scored a season-low 10 points in the fourth quarter. "I am disappointed in the fact that I had two opportunities to win the game and I missed both shots," said Rose, who scored 30 points. "That is disappointing. A lot of times you go home from a game and feel like you got beat, but tonight we lost." Marshall had the first four points of the first overtime, but Allen gave Miami a 93-92 lead with 41 seconds to go. Crawford hit another 3-pointer to put Chicago in front with 27.5 seconds remaining. Grant had a layup and was fouled with 14.1 seconds to go. He missed the free throw, grabbed his own rebound, then could not run down Allen's missed jumper at the buzzer. Rookie Caron Butler opened the second extra session with a 3-pointer for Miami, but the Bulls scored the nest six points. Jones made a driving layup with 53 seconds to go, setting the stage for Grant's last-second heroics. Miami shot 58 percent (11-for-19) in the opening quarter and built a 31-19 lead. The Heat were ahead, 55-48, at halftime. Riley used just eight players, all logging at least 17 minutes, and won despite making just 4-of-17 3-point attempts. Chicago was 8-of-14 from the arc but got to the free-throw line just 15 times. The Bulls also committed 21 turnovers.
