Game StoryPORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- Without Rasheed Wallace, the Portland Trail Blazers had little hope of stopping Kevin Garnett. Garnett had 31 points and 20 rebounds and Wally Szczerbiak scored 16 points as the Minnesota Timberwolves held on for a 104-98 victory over the Blazers. Wallace was suspended seven games by the NBA on Saturday for confronting an official in the parking lot of the Rose Garden following Wednesday's win over Memphis. Unfortunately for Portland, its first game without its best player was against one of the best power forwards in the game. Garnett made 11-of-16 shots from the floor and 9-of-10 free throws as he dominated Zach Randolph, Dale Davis and Ruben Patterson. "He keeps us in the game," Saunders said. "When you've got him playing the way he's playing at such a high level, you can't take that for granted. He comes to play every night and a game like that, we would have never won a game without that type of performance. He just did everything out there and I don't know how he does it, but he seems to find the energy." "Kevin Garnett was as good as he could be," Portland coach Maurice Cheeks said. "When you have a marquee player like that, you can put the ball in his hands and expect him to make a basket. Sure, we missed Rasheed's presence. He's long and gives Garnett a good challenge. But I thought Zach did OK." Despite Garnett's dominance, the Blazers rallied from a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit and pulled within 96-94 on a layup by Derek Anderson with 67 seconds to go. Garnett responded with a tough baseline jumper 22 seconds later and Szczerbiak made four free throws in an eight-second span down the stretch as Minnesota posted its fifth win in seven games. Joe Smith scored 12 points and Rod Strickland had 12 and 10 assists as the Timberwolves had six players in double figures, including all five starters. Rasho Nesterovic had 10 points and eight rebounds and Kendall Gill also scored 10 points for Minnesota, which held a 49-40 rebounding advantage and scored 25 second-chance points. "The biggest thing is the second-chance points we had tonight," Saunders said. "We knew we had to rebound to give ourselves a chance." Bonzi Wells had 31 points and 13 rebounds and Anderson finished with 16 points for the Blazers, who lost for just the fourth time in 17 games. "Bonzi was very good, especially when he attacked the basket," Cheeks said. "That was one of our goals, to try to attack the rim. Bonzi makes it even harder for people to guard him when he makes a few outside shots, which he did." "It's tough. Sheed's our best player. Everybody has to step up and we fell short," Wells said. "I know myself, (Anderson), Scottie (Pippen) and everybody on the team has to step up."
