Game Story

NEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- David Wesley stayed hot. This time, his teammates joined him. Wesley had his second straight big game with 28 points as the New Orleans Hornets shot above 50 percent for the first time in more than two months and cruised to a 114-102 victory over the Phoenix Suns. In a game where points were at a premium, Wesley scored 34 in a 90-83 win over Chicago on Friday. In that contest, he made 11-of-20 shots, but the rest of the Hornets sank just 23-of-63. New Orleans had not made at least half its shots since a December 3 win at Chicago. But led by Wesley's 9-of-16 effort and Jamaal Magloire's 8-of-10 showing, the Hornets clicked at nearly 53 percent (41-of-78), including 7-of-12 from 3-point range. "It's a lot different than having the ball in your hands, shooting the ball off the dribble," said Wesley, who had been sharing point guard duties during Baron Davis' injury absence. "It has me on the weak side, coming off screens, and after playing two years at this position, I've really adapted to it well." Magloire matched a career high with 22 points, Jamal Mashburn added 19 and Davis 18 for the Hornets, who have won consecutive contests following a five-game slide. "It feels good to be on this side of the wins and losses," Wesley said. "We played four good quarters of basketball." "The key today was we didn't have those five or six or seven minutes without a basket," Davis said. "When they would go on a 6-0 or 7-0 run, we'd come back and answer." Shawn Marion had 25 points and 16 rebounds and Stephon Marbury and Amare Stoudemire added 22 apiece for the Suns, who lost the opener of a five-game road trip. They have dropped four straight road games. "We should not expect to win games when we give up 53 percent shooting to the opposition from the floor," Suns coach Frank Johnson said. "We have to come out on the road with our hard hats on, and for some reason we did not come out with that energy." Magloire scored eight points in the first quarter before a 3-pointer by Marion ended the period and gave Phoenix its last lead at 28-26. Mashburn scored six points and Wesley had a jumper in a 12-2 spurt that started the second quarter. A fast-break dunk by Magloire opened a 54-44 advantage with 3:05 left before the Hornets settled for a 60-52 halftime lead, matching their highest-scoring first half of the season. Wesley scored eight points in the third period, including a pair of 3-pointers that came after Phoenix had pulled within four points. He found Mashburn for a transition layup that made it 77-66 with 3:46 to go. New Orleans held an 83-72 advantage entering the fourth quarter and Wesley drilled 3-pointers on consecutive possessions to open the period. He was 5-of-6 from the arc. "We made some baskets in the fourth quarter," Wesley said. "That had been on our minds. We need to make baskets at the end to win the game." Magloire also had 10 rebounds for his second straight double-double. Davis handed out nine assists and Mashburn eight. Phoenix shot 45 percent (37-of-83). Stoudemire had 13 rebounds but battled foul trouble. Marbury had 11 assists but made just 6-of-21 shots.
