Game Story

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Kevin Garnett scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds as the Minnesota Timberwolves continued their home domination of the Seattle SuperSonics with a 96-91 victory. Rasho Nesterovic scored 18 points and three others had 16 for the Timberwolves, who posted their season-high third straight win. After the SuperSonics closed within 90-89 on Kenny Anderson's 13-footer with 1:48 to go, Garnett countered with a short jumper. "It would be nice if we could put another three wins on top of these," Garnett said. "I've been a part of bigger streaks, but it's a good start." Garnett went 10-of-13 from the floor as Minnesota shot 52.5 percent (42-of-80). "He (Garnett) is so long and tall, it's hard to get his shot and affect and try to make it change around," Lewis said. "The only thing you can do is try to push him off the block and make him shoot as far a jump shot as possible." Prior to Garnett's shot, Seattle missed a chance to take the lead when Brent Barry's open 3-pointer with 40 seconds to play was short. "I was surprised that I was that open, and unfortunately didn't knock it down," Barry said. "But hopefully, next game I'll get an opportunity to shoot a ball like that." Rashard Lewis' bucket with 14 seconds left made it 92-91, but Troy Hudson hit four free throws in the last eight seconds to ice the win, the Wolves' eighth straight at home against Seattle. Gary Payton scored 20 points and Desmond Mason added 14 as the Sonics lost their third consecutive road game. Minnesota got off to a fast start that resulted in its best quarter of the season. Nesterovic had 12 points on 6-of-6 shooting as the Timberwolves shot 77 percent (17-of-22) en route to a 39-24 advantage. "I thought the first quarter really burned us," Sonics coach Nate McMillan said. "That was a tough way to start. It was an uphill battle after the first quarter." Seattle inched back and Minnesota was forced to settle for a 54-47 halftime lead, which grew as large as 64-53 on a dunk by Joe Smith with 6:53 to play in the third. Smith, Hudson and Wally Szczerbiak scored 16 points apiece for Minnesota. "We did a good job on defense," Szczerbiak said. "They go small and they make you match up with them. In the second half, they had some pretty good players on the floor." The Sonics put together their first serious rush in the fourth quarter. After Gary Trent's 14-footer 36 seconds in gave the Wolves a 73-67 advantage, Vladimir Radmanovic knocked down a 3-pointer and Mason sank a driving lay-in. Minnesota stopped the spurt and went on to take its biggest lead of the quarter at 88-81 with 5:27 to go on Szczerbiak's 3-pointer. But Lewis hit two free throws and Mason and Payton hit jumpers to cut it to 88-87 with 3:38 remaining. The 18-footer was the only shot attempt in nine fourth-quarter minutes for Payton, who also chipped in 13 assists and six rebounds. Mason netted 14 points and Barry and Anderson had 11 for the Sonics, who went 40-of-80 from the field despite hitting on just 3-of-14 from the arc.
