Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Sam Cassell scored 10 of his 31 points in the final 4:15 as the red-hot Milwaukee Bucks rallied for a 97-90 victory over the Washington Wizards. The Bucks trailed, 82-79, until Cassell sank two free throws and a 13-footer with 3:35 to go for the lead, which Milwaukee never relinquished. "It was a win for us, and that's all I care about," Cassell said. "We needed this win, and we came out and did what we had to do to get it." Tim Thomas scored 17 points and Ray Allen added 16 for the Bucks, who won for the eighth time in nine games and improved to 1-1 on their season-high eight-game homestand. Thomas drained three 3-pointers as Milwaukee shot an impressive 10-of-21 from behind the arc. Michael Jordan scored 24 points but missed three key jumpers in the final minute. Kwame Brown matched a career high with 20 points for Washington, which lost for the fifth time in the past six games. Matched up against Allen most of the way, Jordan was 11-of-24 from the field. Anthony Mason guarded Jordan in the latter stages of the fourth. "Mason and I have had our battles," said Jordan, whose Chicago Bulls usually had to go through Mason's New York Knicks on their way to six titles in the 1990s. "(Milwaukee coach George Karl) just wanted a physical body on me, but I'm accustomed to that." "He's still one of the best in the league, he's just changed his game," Mason said. Washington's Jerry Stackhouse scored just five points before leaving in the third quarter with a groin injury. The Bucks (23-22) shot 47 percent (36-of-76) from the field and committed just eight turnovers in the win, which put them a game over .500 for the first time since they were 6-5 on November 22. The tight fourth quarter featured five lead changes as neither team was able to wrest control. Thomas' two free throws with 4:24 to go matched the Wizards' biggest advantage at 82-79. After Cassell's go-ahead bucket made it 83-82, Allen sank two free throws and Jordan hit a fadeaway. Cassell and Mason answered with jumpers around a miss by Jordan, opening a 93-87 lead with 35 seconds left. "I thought we played very serious basketball. Mason and Sam played well for us," Karl said. "It's that time of year when keeping your focus is very important." Cassell reach the 30-point plateau for the third time this season. He was held to just eight points in a loss to Philadelphia on Tuesday. Michael Redd scored 12 points and Mason added eight and eight boards. Etan Thomas scored nine points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Wizards, who shot 44 percent (36-of-82) from the floor and held a 46-34 rebounding advantage. "Brown and Thomas played great. We need those guys to play like that every night," Wizards coach Doug Collins said. The Bucks' biggest lead came in the first quarter when Tim Thomas' 3-pointer with 2:26 left gave them a 26-14 advantage. Tim Thomas had 15 points in the first half.
