Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Even without Jason Kidd and Richard Jefferson, it was business as usual for the New Jersey Nets. With Kidd and Jefferson watching from the sidelines, Kenyon Martin scored 23 points and Kerry Kittles added 21 as the Nets pulled away for a 89-72 victory over the New Orleans Hornets. Kidd missed his first game in 1 1/2 seasons as a Net due to a strained right groin, while Jefferson sat out for the first time this season with a stomach virus. Kidd suffered the injury during the third quarter of Wednesday's win over Washington and was held out of the game after undergoing treatment on Thursday. Kidd, a free agent at the end of this season, is not expected to play Saturday in Detroit. Jefferson, who has started every game this season, will fly to Detroit alone and is listed as probable. But New Jersey didn't miss a beat with Anthony Johnson starting for Kidd at point guard and Brian Scalabrine starting for Jefferson at small forward. Both players made their first starts of the season and contributed to New Jersey's fourth straight win and 21st home victory. "That's a real gutsy win by our team," Nets coach Byron Scott said. "I thought every individual that played tonight, played pretty well. The thing that I had said before the game was that this was going to be a great challenge for us. We've been able to pass all the tests the last year and a half and we've had some adverse situations and this is another one of them. The guys came up big tonight." "I think we have a good team here. We have a lot of depth. This was a great illustration. A.J. hadn't started a game all season, but played well and Scalabrine also hasn't started a game and he played well as well. The guys played good, solid team basketball on both ends of the court." In 33 minutes, Johnson efficiently ran the offense, helping the Nets to a 50-20 advantage in the paint. Scalabrine's hustle allowed Martin to convert several easy baskets. Johnson finished with 10 points, three assists and a season-high three steals. In 42 minutes, Scalabrine collected five points, seven rebounds and two blocks. Martin shot 9-of-17 and pulled down 13 rebounds, while Kittles made 7-of-13 shots and dished out seven assists after returning from a two-game absence due to personal reasons. "It felt good to lead this team to a win knowing Jason was not playing," Johnson said. "We have a talented group here. Everyone stepped up and we were able to get the victory." "We were shorthanded," Martin added. "I tried to pick up the slack along with the rest of the guys. I knew Kidd wasn't playing, but we didn't know R.J. wasn't playing. Scalabrine played well and A.J. stepped up. This was just a great team effort." In their first meeting with the Hornets since last season's Eastern Conference semifinals, the Nets turned a 44-37 halftime lead into a 71-53 cushion through three periods. "This is the first time I've seen them this year," said Hornets forward Jamal Mashburn, who did not face the Nets in last season's playoffs due to an inner ear infection. "But they play the same stuff as last year. They got easy layups, while we fought for our baskets." Martin scored eight points during the third quarter as New Jersey took control with a decisive 19-6 spurt that made it 68-51 with 2:34 remaining. With New Orleans employing a zone defense most of the game, the Nets had little difficulties running their offense. Martin started the burst with a running jumper and Lucious Harris ended it with a 3-pointer and long jumper. The Nets built their lead to 79-59 as Kittles sank a pair of free throws with 8 1/2 minutes remaining. But they were outscored 13-2 over the next 4 1/2 minutes and had their lead sliced to 81-72 on Mashburn's jumper over Martin. But the Nets avoided a complete collapse as Johnson stole former Net David Wesley's pass, which started a game-ending 8-0 run. Playing without Baron Davis (knee) and Elden Campbell (neck), the Hornets shot just 33 percent (29-of-87). Mashburn paced the Hornets with 17 points but made just 6-of-17 shots.
