Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Michael Jordan more than made up for the absence of Jerry Stackhouse. Jordan scored a season-high 45 points as the Washington Wizards defeated the New Orleans Hornets, 109-104, for just their second victory in seven games. "He was unbelievable," Wizards coach Doug Collins said. "He had that bounce in his step today at shootaround. He was frisky at shootaround." "He's Michael Jordan," Hornets forward Jamal Mashburn said. "A lot of people talk about his age (39) and everything, but the guy can still play. It's not a surprise to me that he can get 40 on any given night. He's an exceptional player. You don't get 30,000-plus points and not know how to play." Bryon Russell added 13 points and Kwame Brown 12 for Washington, which was playing its first game since losing Stackhouse to a strained left groin in a loss to Milwaukee on Thursday. Stackhouse will sit out until after the All-Star break. The Wizards also were missing starting guard Larry Hughes, who is day-to-day with a bruised left knee. "You never know what could happen on a given night," Jordan said. "The unknown is something that is intriguing me the most. Tonight, with a couple of guys out, no one knew what could happen. I felt very comfortable and I came into the arena feeling really good about this." The Hornets led, 86-82, after Mashburn nailed a leaning jumper with 8:51 to play. But rookie Juan Dixon countered with a 3-pointer to commence a 13-0 run over the next 3 1/2 minutes, and New Orleans could not come all the way back. The Hornets managed to climb within 103-100 on a pair of free throws by Robert Traylor with 30 seconds remaining, but Jordan answered with two from the line three seconds later. Tyronn Lue then stole the ball from former Wizard Courtney Alexander, was fouled and sank a pair from the stripe to give Washington a seven-point advantage with 19 seconds to play, and New Orleans got no closer than the final score. Mashburn scored a season-best 39 points and David Wesley added 16 for New Orleans, which lost for the 14th time in 20 games. The Hornets dominated the Wizards on the glass, 45-30, but committed 23 turnovers that Washington converted into 34 points. New Orleans scored 16 points off 10 Washington turnovers. "That many turnovers and that many opportunities hurt us," Mashburn said. "That was the reason we lost. We had the advantage in rebounding, and I think we led in several other categories, but the turnovers were what hurt us. That was the ballgame, pretty much." "I thought we played well defensively," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "I just think that they got easy baskets off of turnovers. We just didn't handle the ball well. When you turn the ball over 22 times and you only force 10 turnovers, then you are not going to win very many games." Washington jumped out to a 14-4 lead and took a 27-18 advantage into the second quarter. Jordan had 16 points in the first period. "Doug was begging for the energy level to come up," Jordan said. "My offense ignited everything energy-wise, and then the guys kind of fed off of me. From that point I was out of the box and I was going to ride it as long as I could and try to pull anyone along with me." New Orleans went on a 15-2 run midway through the second period to take a 38-32 lead, then went into the break with a 51-46 edge. The Hornets led, 82-76, after three quarters, but they could not hold off Jordan and the Wizards in the final 12 minutes. "He was on a roll tonight, and when he is like that it's virtually impossible to stop him," Silas said. "I thought we did as good a job as we could, but we just didn't come up with enough."
