Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Robert Horry said the Los Angeles Lakers would be back to .500 by the end of January. They were just a couple of days late. Kobe Bryant scored 35 points as the Lakers held on for a 97-94 victory over the shorthanded Indiana Pacers that put the three-time defending champions at the .500 mark for the first time in three months. "These are baby steps," Bryant said. "We wanted to get back to .500 first and we've been able to achieve that." Shaquille O'Neal had 19 points, 12 rebounds and seven blocks for the Lakers (23-23), who are at the break-even mark for the first time since November 3, when they beat Portland to move to 2-2. "The last 15-20 games we've played a little bit better," O'Neal said. "We're playing harder." After a home loss to Sacramento on Christmas dropped Los Angeles to 11-19, Horry claimed the club would get back to .500 by January 31. A home loss to New Jersey on January 24 made that impossible, but the Lakers have won four in a row since, all against quality opponents. "We're getting close," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "There are a couple more parts. Our shooting and defense must get better." LA turned back Phoenix and Sacramento on the road and Utah at home before visiting Indiana, which put up a tremendous battle although it was without stopper Ron Artest and coach Isiah Thomas, both of whom are serving suspensions that carry into the All-Star break. The Lakers took a 74-70 after three quarters and nursed it through the final period. They survived a potential tying 3-pointer by Reggie Miller at the buzzer and can go to the All-Star break with a winning record by beating New York on Thursday. "It doesn't feel good yet," Jackson said. "It will feel good if we beat New York. Then we will feel like we did something." "They have the two best players in the league at their positions, so I'm sure they are going to turn it around," Miller said. "It's going to be tough because the West has some good teams ahead of them that aren't losing much. They are going to have to win a lot of games just to get to the seventh or eighth spot." Jermaine O'Neal had 23 points and 20 rebounds for the Pacers, who have lost two of their last three home games after a 21-1 start at Conseco Fieldhouse. They have dropped five of their last six meetings with the Lakers. "There are so many things you can point out," O'Neal said. "When it comes down to it, the Lakers beat us. As pros, we have to find a way to win the game." The game had 15 lead changes, 22 ties and none of the animosity of some of the recent meetings. Bryant and Miller fought when the Pacers visited the Lakers last March, and Shaquille O'Neal and Brad Miller scrapped last January, when Miller was a member of the Chicago Bulls. Two free throws and a driving layup by Bryant in the final minute of the third quarter gave LA the lead for good. A driving dunk by Jeff Foster made it 78-77 with 8:09 to go, but Bryant responded with a jumper. Shaquille O'Neal missed two free throws, but the Pacers wasted a great chance to get closer by missing five shots on one possession. Two foul shots each by Devean George and Bryant rebuilt the lead to 84-77 with 5:54 left. A 3-pointer by Miller cut the deficit to 85-83 with 3:56 remaining. Bryant drilled a jumper and Derek Fisher buried a 3-pointer for a 90-83 bulge with 3:17 to play. "You can see why (Bryant's) a great player," said Pacers assistant Brendan Malone, who coached in place of Thomas. "He can get wherever he needs to be on the floor." Two free throws by Horry gave LA its largest lead at 94-85 with 2:15 left before Indiana made one last push. Baskets by Jermaine O'Neal, Erick Strickland and Al Harrington pulled the Pacers within 94-91 with 55 seconds to go. They chased the ball out of Bryant's hands, but George made a clutch 3-pointer with 36 seconds to play. "Devean got a good look at it and hit it," Bryant said. "That is a good confidence boost for him." Brad Miller made a 3-pointer and Bryant missed, but with Indiana out of timeouts and Harrington hesitating after grabbing the rebound, Reggie Miller had to rush a 32-footer that bounded off the front rim. "I had visions of Reggie knocking down that three at the end," Jackson said. Fisher scored 12 points and Samaki Walker added 10 and 10 rebounds for the Lakers, who shot 40 percent (35-of-87) and committed 13 turnovers, all by Bryant or O'Neal. Harrington scored 22 points and Strickland added 18 for the Pacers, who shot just 35 percent (32-of-91). Reggie Miller scored 14 points and Brad Miller added 13 and 10 boards. "We had the shots, we just didn't knock them down," Strickland said. Bryant scored 15 points in the first quarter, but Indiana grabbed a 28-26 edge. A free throw by Brad Miller gave the Pacers their largest lead at 31-26 with 10:24 to go in the second period.
