Game Story

NEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- Led by hot-shooting Jamal Mashburn, the New Orleans Hornets turned the Sacramento Kings' letdown into a meltdown. Mashburn scored 26 points and David Wesley added 17 and nine assists as the Hornets posted a 108-84 victory over the Kings, who were coming off a huge win and ended a three-game road trip. Mashburn, who is averaging 31.7 points in his last three games, went 10-of-17 from the field and drained four 3-pointers for New Orleans, which posted its third straight home win. "This is a feel-good win, we went out as a team and beat them well," Wesley said. "We feel good about the way we played." The Hornets used an 11-0 burst late in the second quarter to take a 55-46 halftime cushion, then padded their lead in a lopsided third period. Peja Stojakovic scored 20 points and Jim Jackson 19 for the Kings, whose exciting 110-109 triumph at league-leading Dallas on Tuesday was its only win in the past four games. P.J. Brown collected 14 points and 10 rebounds and Jerome Moiso netted a career-high 13 points and grabbed seven boards for the Hornets, who shot 49 percent (43-of-88) from the floor, held a 52-41 rebounding advantage and dished out an eye-catching 31 assists. "It's great to be playing 10, 15, 20 minutes and even more sometimes," Moiso said. "It's just good to be out there and do the little things, like play defense, rebound and block shots. The rest will come." The Kings started off hot but faded impressively. After hitting 16 of their first 29 shots, they went just 19-of-62 thereafter and finished at 38.5 percent. "We had no energy tonight. In the second half, we definitely had nothing left," Kings coach Rick Adelman said. Sacramento shot 52 percent the night before. "We just wore them down," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "They played a tough game last night and won it. "We knew that if we play aggressive and hound them all night, we would have a good chance to win." The Hornets also got off to a fast start, hitting 54 percent from the floor in the first quarter en route to a 32-26 lead. They built on that in the second. After Stojakovic's lay-in with 4:35 left cut the deficit to 42-41, Jamaal Magliore hit two free throws, Wesley sank a 3-pointer and Mashburn sank two buckets. Magliore added on a 13-footer to cap the spurt with 1:35 left. Mashburn scored 14 in the first half. He has been virtually unguardable the past three games, averaging 31.7 points while hitting 37-of-59 (63 percent) from the field over that span. In the third quarter, Mashburn dropped in 10 points, including a deep jumper with 74 seconds to go that gave the Hornets an 80-60 bulge. Mike Bibby scored 11 points for the Kings, who in the second quarter lost center Vlade Divac to a back strain for the rest of the game. "When Vlade went out, we were still down 10 points," said Keon Clark, who scored 10 points and hauled in nine rebounds. "It's not about who's injured because we have to run with the players available." Injury-depleted Sacramento already was without All-Star Chris Webber, reserve forward Scot Pollard and guard Bobby Jackson.
