Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- The hottest team in the NBA went ice cold when it counted. Paul Pierce scored 20 of his 36 points in the first quarter and Walter McCarty and Antoine Walker buried clutch 3-pointers down the stretch as the Boston Celtics rallied for a 100-92 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers. The Blazers went into the All-Star break having won 22 of their previous 27 games for the best record in the NBA since mid-December. They opened a five-game homestand with a loss to red-hot San Antonio on Wednesday and collapsed in the final minutes against the Celtics. Boston led by as many as 20 in the first quarter behind the dominance of Pierce, who was questionable prior to the game with a groin injury. "We didn't think he was going to play this morning," Boston coach Jim O'Brien said. "He came and we said, 'How do you feel?' And he said, 'I feel good.' He came down (in warmups) and did a 360 dunk, which almost gave me a heart attack. So I figured he was ready to play." "I'm not surprised by anything I do on the court," Pierce said. "It's just one of those nights. When you've got it going early, when the outside shot is falling, you just get in a good rhythm from the start of the game." The Celtics struggled for most of the final three quarters and trailed by as many as seven points in the fourth. They began to lose their cool as O'Brien was ejected with 9:39 remaining. Portland had a 91-86 lead after Bonzi Wells buried a jumper with 4:31 left but managed just one point thereafter. Wells sank 1-of-2 free throws for a 92-88 edge at the 2:33 mark and the Blazers did not score again. Eric Williams and Shammond Williams each buried a pair of free throws to forge a 92-92 tie with 1:57 left. Wells missed two free throws 40 seconds later and Pierce drew a triple-team before dishing to McCarty for a wide-open 3-pointer that gave Boston the lead for good with 73 seconds remaining. Portland's Scottie Pippen missed a jumper and Walker sealed the game when his 3-point attempt bounced around the rim twice before dropping with 37 seconds left. "One that just happened to fall for me," he said. "It felt good leaving my hand. A little Irish luck I guess." Walker was showboating at halfcourt before turning around and intercepting a pass from Pippen. Shammond Williams sank two free throws with 31 seconds left as the Celtics improved to 2-0 on a season-high six-game road trip. "That was one of my all-time favorite wins," O'Brein said. "It shows a lot of guts to come back. Our guys are resilient, mentally tough. With the way we spread the court, they do not ever feel that they are out of the game." Walker buried 4-of-9 3-pointers en route to 19 points and Pierce sank 3-of-7 shots from beyond the arc as Boston made 14-of-38 shots from 3-point range. Rasheed Wallace scored 30 points on 11-of-16 shooting and Derek Anderson added 16 for Portland, which has lost its last three home games against Boston. "This was one of the toughest losses we've had," Cheeks said. "It looked like we had the game under control, and then we had some bad decisions down the stretch. I'll probably second-guess myself a number of times. "I didn't think I had a very good game in terms of the players I had out there from time to time. As it turned out, they made big plays and some shots and we didn't finish the game." The Blazers had a 43-28 rebounding cushion but were just 2-of-15 from 3-point range and missed 13 of their 41 free throws. Dale Davis had 14 points and nine rebounds and Pippen collected 10 rebounds and nine assists but scored just two points, missed all five of his shots from the field and committed seven of Portland's 24 turnovers. "This was a tough loss for us," Pippen said. "We played bad and didn't deserve the game. We played good in spurts, but overall we just didn't have it tonight." The Blazers had a 14-7 lead before the Celtics buried four consecutive 3-pointers to spark a 30-3 run. Pierce capped the burst with a jumper to give Boston its largest lead at 37-17 with 75 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Portland pulled within 39-27 before Pierce went to the bench with 9:52 left in the second. The Blazers responded with a 13-4 run and pulled within 43-40 on a dunk by Wells with 4:53 to go.
