Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- If this turns out to be Gary Payton's final 
appearance in a Seattle uniform, at least he went out as a 
winner.

The subject of numerous rumors, Payton scored 31 points on the
eve of the trade deadline as the Sonics snapped a season-high
six-game losing streak with a 103-94 victory over the New York
Knicks.

"I'm happy with the effort the guys gave tonight," Seattle coach
Nate McMillan said. "We did a good job of executing our game
plan."

New York dropped to 2-2 on its six-game road trip after a late
rally fell short. The Knicks cut a 16-point deficit to 91-88 on
Clarence Weatherspoon's two foul shots with 3:44 left but got no
closer.

Payton, who was playing in his 999th game, completed a
three-point play to make it 101-92 with 45 seconds remaining. As
is his custom, he declined to talk to the media following the
game.

"Gary Payton had a solid floor game both scoring the ball and
distributing the ball," McMillan said. "I thought the guys came
out and played a solid game against a very good team in New York
and controlled the game, I thought, throughout the game."

Rashard Lewis added 26 points for the Sonics, who took advantage
of the Knicks' porous defense to get to the line 34 times. They
made 26 free throws.

"In the long run, you're not going to beat teams by outscoring
them," New York coach Don Chaney said. "You've got to stop them.
You've got to get back to basics so that our mentality is
defense first and offense second."

Allan Houston and Latrell Sprewell, also the subject of trade
rumors, scored 22 points apiece for the Knicks, who never
recovered from an early 27-11 deficit.

The slow start left Houston perplexed.

"I thought we would be ready," he said. "You could tell they
were playing with some urgency and desperation, and if you don't
match that, you're going to see what happens. Not only did we
not match them, we didn't even come close."

New York guard Charlie Ward left the game in the first half with
an abdominal strain and did not return.  Chaney thought Ward's
absence in the second half hurt the Knicks.

"He gives you the big three, the big rebound and the tough
charge - all little winning things when the pressure is on,"
Chaney said. "I would like to think he would have made a
difference when the pressure was on."

The Knicks tied the contest, 49-49, on Howard Eisley's 3-pointer
with 9:15 left in the third quarter but started fouling and the
Sonics feasted at the line in the third quarter.

During one sequence, Lewis was fouled on three straight
possessions and hit all six free throws, giving Seattle a 69-62
lead with 2:27 left in the third quarter. Lewis' dunk capped a
8-0 spurt that made it 75-62 with 52 seconds left in the third.

Payton's finger roll with three seconds left gave Seattle an
80-66 cushion heading into the final quarter.

The Sonics began to unravel with fouls and turnovers, allowing
the Knicks to climb back into the contest. Weatherspoon hit four
straight from the line to bring New York within three with
under four minutes left.

"It's (losing) a lot of pressure," Lewis said. "If you lose
three or four straight, there is pressure, especially coming
back home and playing."

But Lewis answered with a short jumper and Vladimir Radmanovic
drilled a 3-pointer to make it 96-88 with 2:53 remaining. The
Sonics were not threatened thereafter.

Radmanovic and Predrag Drobnjak scored 11 points apiece for the
Sonics, who snapped a four-game losing streak against the
Knicks. Reggie Evans grabbed 14 rebounds for Seattle.

Kurt Thomas and Weatherspoon contributed 14 and 11 points,
respectively, for New York, which closes the trip with games
against Golden State and Sacramento.
