Game Story

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Kevin Garnett provided the foundation for the Minnesota Timberwolves' team-record 13th straight home victory with 34 points and 16 rebounds, then Troy Hudson finished the job. Hudson scored seven of his 12 points in the final 90 seconds and grabbed an important rebound as the Timberwolves nearly squandered a 24-point second-half lead before holding on for a 103-96 victory over the Detroit Pistons. Chauncey Billups scored seven straight points in the fourth quarter to bring the Pistons within 95-94 before Hudson bailed out Minnesota. He hit a jumper from the top of the key with 1:20 left, then drilled a 3-pointer 33 seconds later. "Those plays were run for me," Hudson said. "I'm glad (coach Flip Saunders) has the confidence in me. KG set some great picks on the top to open up the shots." "That's kind of average for him every night," Saunders said of Garnett. "That's the one thing. There were (14,881) people here tonight and the people not here are missing a really unique player. No one is playing at his level right now. So hopefully, people will notice that and come watch him play." With Detroit trailing, 100-94, Richard Hamilton missed a 3-pointer from the corner and Hudson grabbed the rebound from the hands of Pistons forward Ben Wallace. Hudson made a pair of free throws with 23 seconds left to put the game out of reach. Garnett also did plenty of damage in the fourth quarter, scoring 11 points. Detroit's defense clamped down on Garnett and kept him from scoring after he hit a jumper with 5:17 left to give the Timberwolves a 91-83 lead. "KG was really big in the fourth with some big shots," Saunders said. "It was a big win." Minnesota also got 20 points and five rebounds from Wally Szczerbiak and has all but one win during its home streak since Szczerbiak returned from the injured list on January 10. Billups and Hamilton each scored 23 points to lead the Pistons, who had a three-game winning streak snapped. "The bottom line is you can't play for 24 minutes," Detroit coach Rick Carlisle said. "The first half, we got completely outplayed. The second half, we played harder, played better as a team because the intensity was there. You can't fall behind by 20 on the road and expect to come back against any team, especially a team that's this good." "Chauncey and I are really learning to play with each other," Hamilton added. "In the second half, we came out aggressive." Hudson had 11 assists, including eight in the first three quarters, before his scoring burst in the fourth. He fouled out with 18 seconds left after helping seal Minnesota's win. "Over the last few games, he's had 10-plus assists consistently," Saunders said. "So he will not be as aggressive offensively when he's getting those assists." Timberwolves center Rasho Nesterovic pulled down 13 rebounds for the third time this season, tying a career high. Corliss Williamson had a strong game off the bench for Detroit, collecting 11 points and 10 rebounds. But the Pistons shot just 43 percent (35-of-81) from the field as they had a three-game winning streak snapped and lost for only the second time in 11 games.
