Game Story

NEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- Jamal Mashburn tied his career high and won the game with one shot. Mashburn scored 50 points, including a fallaway jumper with one second remaining left in overtime, to lift the New Orleans Hornets to a 125-123 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies. Mashburn converted two free throws with 26 seconds left in regulation to give New Orleans a 112-109 lead. Memphis' Jason Williams missed a 3-pointer, but Lorenzen Wright got the offensive rebound to Wesley Person, whose 3-pointer rattled in with 16 seconds to go. "That was big shot for us," Person said. "It kept us in it. It's too bad we couldn't get the win." Mashburn missed a nine-foot jumper as time expired but scored seven points in overtime. He put the Hornets ahead, 121-119, with 67 seconds remaining, but Wright made a layup. With 36 seconds to go, Mashburn sank two free throws for a 123-121 advantage, but Williams knotted it again with a jumper from the left side. After Mashburn's go-ahead basket and a timeout, Person's 3-pointer from the left corner was long at the buzzer. "I felt all along I was going to take the last shot," Mashburn said. "I kept telling P.J. (Brown), `If they score, just give me the basketball and we'll take it from there.' I wasn't calling timeout, I was going take that last shot. I wasn't going to give it up." "On that last play, we got a good shot, a wide-open shot," Grizzlies coach Hubie Brown said. "I thought the execution was excellent. We ran a stagger. They switched, but we got the great screen. You can't get a better look than that. So down the stretch and in overtime, we were very pleased with our execution of getting guys shots that we wanted in the areas that we wanted to get them." Mashburn equaled the 50 points he scored against Chicago while playing for Dallas on November 11, 1994. He set a new franchise mark with 33 field goal attempts, making 17. "I was aggressive early and that just made things happen," said Mashburn, who had 24 points at halftime. "I got into a rhythm early and it just went on from there. It was kind of a snowball effect. Things kind of slowed down a little." "Mash was a guy on fire," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "He was well-rested. I gave him as much rest as I could. He did everything, everything asked of him tonight. He made all of his free throws. I just knew that Mash would find a way (at the end). He had been finding a way all night." David Wesley scored a season-high 35 points, Jamaal Magloire had 20 and 15 rebounds and Brown contributed 18 and seven for the Hornets, who have won six of their last nine games. "I haven't been in a game like this that I can remember," Wesley said. "I was in a game with Mike (Michael Jordan) and Scottie (Pippen) and they had 30-something apiece but never this kind of lopsided game where I am involved, too. ... It was a fun game, it was fun to play. It had to been fun to watch." New Orleans set a season high in points and tied season bests in assists (34), field goals made (48) and field goal percentage at 54.5 percent (48-of-88). The Hornets played their ninth overtime game this season, also a franchise record, improving to 5-4. Acquired Wednesday from Orlando, Mike Miller paid immediate dividends with 23 points off the bench for the Grizzlies. "He's everything that (general manager) Jerry West thought and wanted," Brown said. "He's going to have a great career with us. For a guy who just ran through the plays this morning at the shootaround, after the shootaround and again tonight before the game, he was terrific." Miller helped the Grizzlies' bench outscore the Hornets' reserves, 55-2. "The coaching staff did a good job of going over the plays with me before the game and at the shootaround this morning," Miller said. "But it may take me 10 or 15 games to learn all the plays. I really wasn't surprised that I played so much. That's the reason that they brought me in here. However, I'm disappointed with the loss." Person finished 19 points and Pau Gasol scored 18, but Memphis failed in a bid for its third straight win. The Grizzlies played most of the game without guard Michael Dickerson, who suffered a lower abdominal strain with 7:02 left in the second quarter. He was activated from the injured list on February 12 after missing all but the first two games of the season with back and groin injuries. "The major problem of the evening is that we may have lost Mike Dickerson," Brown said. "(The injury is) in the same groin area. He's in a tremendous amount of pain. That puts a damper on the night." New Orleans took its largest lead, 34-23, with 52 seconds left in the first quarter on two free throws by Wesley. Memphis got back into it by starting the second period with a 12-3 run. Neither team took a commanding lead the rest of the way. There were 10 lead changes and 12 ties in the final two quarters and overtime. Wright scored 16 points and Williams added 12 as the Grizzlies shot 57.5 percent (50-of-87).
