Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- The Seattle SuperSonics without Gary Payton fared much better than the Milwaukee Bucks without Ray Allen. Rashard Lewis scored 20 points and Brent Barry collected 16 and a career-high 16 assists as the shorthanded Sonics rolled to their most lopsided victory of the season, an 88-58 rout of the Bucks. On Thursday, Seattle traded Payton and Desmond Mason to Milwaukee for guards Allen, Kevin Ollie, Ronald Murray and a draft pick. All five players involved in the trade did not play and Allen's future teammates dominated his former club. "It was a bizarre night in all aspects," Barry said. "Not having Gary Payton announced in the starting lineup, seeing Desmond on another bench, it's crazy, but what can you do? Some nights, we had to rely on what Gary was doing and tonight we couldn't do that, so we had to share the ball and move it around." "Playing without Gary and Mase, it was important to stay together and not do too much, not try and be Gary Payton or try and be Desmond Mason, just play the game the way we always try and teach," Seattle coach Nate McMillan added. The Bucks were held to a franchise-low, four points below the previous record set against Chicago on December 5, 1997. "They looked like a motivated home-court team and we looked like a team on the road," Milwaukee coach George Karl said. "We were missing some pieces. We got off to an unbelievably bad start offensively, and that's basically the way it stayed the whole night." "We came out flat, it happens," added Bucks point guard Sam Cassell, who managed just eight points on 3-of-12 shooting. "We can't worry about it. I think the two guys we acquired will be in the lineup tomorrow." The Sonics also traded Kenny Anderson to New Orleans on Thursday and placed center Calvin Booth and forward Ansu Sesay on the injured list before this game. They dressed only eight players and defeated the Bucks for the 11th time in 12 games at Key Arena. Barry picked up the slack, making 6-of-7 shots and falling two shy of Payton's team record for assists. "Brent understood the situation tonight and knew that this team needed to stay together and encourage each other," McMillan said. "He is able to run that spot until the other guys figure out what we are doing. Brent did a good job of being aggressive at times and he was really finding the shooters. And the guys knocked down their shots." Seattle had a 26-23 lead in the second quarter before taking control with a 20-8 run. Vitaly Potapenko scored all eight of his points and Vladimir Radmanovic added seven of his 12 during the spurt, which gave the Sonics a 46-31 cushion with 66 seconds to go. Milwaukee's Tim Thomas scored the first five points of the third quarter before Seattle reeled off 12 straight. Lewis had five points during the run, capping it with a three-point play for a 60-40 advantage at the 6:11 mark. Lewis scored nine points in the fourth quarter as the Sonics cruised to their second straight win following a six-game slide. The Bucks scored a franchise-low 22 points on 10-of-34 shooting in the second half. They shot a season-low 33 percent (24-of-73) overall, making 3-of-15 3-pointers. Thomas finished with 17 points and Toni Kukoc added 14 for Milwaukee, which has lost four straight following a 13-3 stretch.
