Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Jamal Mashburn struck again. Mashburn hit the winning shot for the second time in as many nights, drilling a fallaway jumper from the right wing with two-tenths of a second remaining to give the New Orleans Hornets a 93-91 victory over the Detroit Pistons. "David (Wesley) and I set that up from the get-go," Mashburn said of his last-second shot. "I knew I'd take the last shot." On Friday, Mashburn scored a career-high 50 points, including a fallaway jumper with one second left in overtime, to lift the Hornets to a 125-123 win over Memphis. "I'm just going out and playing," Mashburn added. "People overplay that (in the) zone stuff. I'm just trying to play basketball in its simplest form. When you make things complicated, they usually don't work." The stage again was set for Mashburn after the Pistons tied it on Chauncey Billups' 3-pointer with 14 seconds left. Following a timeout, the Hornets got the ball to Mashburn, who went 1-on-1 against Corliss Williamson. With time running out, Mashburn turned against the shorter Williamson and swished a 20-footer. "I knew he was not giving that ball up to anybody," New Orleans coach Paul Silas said. "He was going to take the last shot and I just had a feeling that the shot was going to go." "We did all we could," Billups said. "We contested his shot and we made him take it leaning away a little bit. He hit it. It was just a great shot by him." Mashburn finished with 29 points and 10 assists. Wesley scored 12 of his 27 points in the fourth quarter, helping the Hornets rallied from a nine-point deficit. "We've had good games before, but after a tough game last night and overtime, to come and win this one was unreal," Silas said. "We played a lot of people, so their legs were fresh going down the stretch. I thought that was a key." Richard Hamilton scored 23 points and Billups added 22 for Detroit, which suffered its second straight loss. Mashburn's last-second shot guaranteed a long flight to the West Coast for Detroit, which begins a five-game road trip at Seattle on Monday. "Obviously, this was a tough loss," Detroit coach Rick Carlisle said. "They just make more plays down the stretch than we did. They're the type of team that takes advantage of your mistakes and we made a few too many. Now, we have to regroup and get ready for a tough trip out west." Following Friday's emotional victory, the Hornets were sluggish early against the Pistons and trailed by as many as 14 points on two occasions in the first half. "It was really ugly in the first quarter," Mashburn said. "We stayed the course and came up with a victory. We lost some tough games this year, but the biggest thing we've learned over the course of the season is to have confidence in ourselves." After scoring only 15 points in the first quarter, New Orleans got untracked in the second period, closing to 49-40 at the intermission. "We were fatigued," Mashburn added. "Our legs were tired and we were just flat. I like playing back-to-backs, but I play better in the second half. By that time, you've loosened up your legs, you've worked up a sweat. You realize you're out there playing basketball and you understand the pace of the game." Following eight lead changes in the third quarter, the Pistons took a 68-65 lead into the final period on Williamson's layup with 26 seconds left. Detroit appeared to regain control early in the fourth, opening a 78-69 lead with 8:30 to go on Jon Barry's dunk, his only basket of the game. But the Hornets reeled off nine straight points, tying the contest on Jamaal Magloire's dunk with 5:51 left. Neither team led by more than three down the stretch. "We relaxed a little bit and you can't do that in this league," Billups said. "We stopped doing what we had done to get the lead. The ball stopped moving. When that happens against a good team, it's going to be tough to win." George Lynch added 12 points for the Hornets, who shot 45 percent from the field (38-of-84) and made all 13 of their free throws. New Orleans got to the line just twice in the first half. Williamson chipped in 18 points for the Pistons, who shot 49 percent (34-of-69).
