Game StoryWASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Dirk Nowitzki scored 29 points and Michael Finley added 24 as the Dallas Mavericks blew a 12-point fourth-quarter lead before recording their fifth straight win, a 106-101 overtime triumph over the Washington Wizards. The Mavericks went more than five minutes without a basket before Nowitzki hit a jumper near the free-throw line for a 92-90 lead 19 seconds into overtime. Dallas never trailed in the extra session, but Washington tied it at 97-97 when Michael Jordan hit a jumper in the lane with 2:10 remaining. Finley answered with a driving layup to put Dallas ahead with 1:50 left. After rookie Juan Dixon missed a wide-open 3-pointer, Steve Nash and Jordan traded jumpers. Jordan nearly stripped Nash on the following possession, but the point guard drove for a layup to give Dallas a 103-99 lead with 27 seconds to play. "It was really a heckuva game with a lot of big plays," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "I really think we were just lucky down the stretch." Jordan hit a turnaround jumper with 23 seconds left and Finley made 1-of-2 free throws three seconds later to give the Mavericks a 104-101 edge. The Wizards had two chances to tie, but Jerry Stackhouse threw up an airball from 3-point range and Finley blocked Dixon's attempt from the right wing before Nash hit two from the line for the final margin. The 40-year-old Jordan, who became the oldest player to top the 40-point plateau with 43 in Friday's victory over New Jersey, scored 30 points, as did Stackhouse. It was the first time two Wizards reached 30 in the same game since Juwan Howard and Richard Hamilton on December 17, 2000. "It is disappointing because of what we were coming off of, playing great basketball in the last couple of games," Jordan said. "We wanted this game badly because it really sends a statement and it makes up for one of the games we gave up earlier." Jordan had a chance to win it in regulation, but his jumper bounced off the back rim as time expired. He made 14-of-26 shots in 52 minutes and scored 14 points in the fourth quarter. "If I was at home, I'd probably hope that he'd make it," Finley said of Jordan's shot. "But going up against him, I knew that the possibility of him making the shot was pretty good. We just wanted to make it tough for him. If it went in, we'd just continue to be part of history, but fortunately for us, he missed." Nash had 22 points and 10 assists for Dallas, which shot 47 percent (40-of-85) and improved to 21-3 against Eastern Conference teams. Nash made just 6-of-16 shots but was 3-of-5 from behind the arc. "I didn't feel great today. I didn't make many shots," Nash said. "When overtime came, I figured that would be a chance to make up for that and just get my team a chance to win." Dixon drove for a layup to cap a 15-4 run and pull the Wizards within 88-87 with 77 seconds left in regulation. Washington had a chance to go ahead after Finley missed a jumper, but Tyronn Lue's jumper bounced off the rim and Nowitzki grabbed the rebound. Nowitzki made a pair from the line with 36 seconds left to give the Mavericks a 90-87 edge. Stackhouse tied it nine seconds later with a 3-pointer from the top of the arc and Nash and Nowitzki missed jumpers before Jordan had the final shot. The Wizards got off to a quick start, reeling off 16 straight points in the first quarter and taking a 26-13 lead after 12 minutes. But Walt Williams scored all of his 10 points in the second quarter, when Dallas outscored Washington, 31-23. "We were a little flat the first quarter," Nowitzki said. "We were a step slow on every play and they made us pay by making some fast-break points. We never really got in the game, but our bench was huge for us in the second quarter. Walt, Eddie (Najera) and those guys came in and made some shots, played defense and got us back in the game. That was huge for us."
