Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Jalen Rose was a triple threat for the Chicago Bulls. Rose had several key free throws down the stretch among his 21 points and added a career-high 14 rebounds and 11 assists for his first career triple-double as the Bulls handed the slumping Phoenix Suns a season-high fourth straight defeat, 90-87. "Being a dreamer, growing up, I thought I was going to come into the league and average a triple-double," Rose said. "But here I am, nine years later, finally getting one." "He had a great game," Suns rookie Amare Stoudemire said. "I can't believe that was his first triple-double. There were a lot of long rebounds this game and he got many of them." Donyell Marshall scored 17 points, Tyson Chandler added 15 and Eddy Curry 13 for the Bulls, who had lost three in a row and 11 of 13. Held scoreless in the first half, Rose scored 12 points in the third quarter as the Bulls outscored the Suns, 31-13, to take a 68-58 edge into the final 12 minutes. "I did not like the way we ended the (first) half," Bulls coach Bill Cartwright said. "We did not look organized. We didn't look like we were playing very hard or like we were focused. (But) we came out in the third quarter and played as hard as we can play at this level. We got after it and we got back in the game." "The team did a good job overall," Marshall said. "The second half we had a lot more energy. We are not going to quit." Phoenix climbed within one point on several occasions in the last two minutes, but Rose went 9-of-10 from the line in the final 1:12, scoring all of Chicago's points as his team held on. "At the end, we wanted to commit a foul and it seemed (Rose) was the only guy with the ball down the stretch, and he was on fire from the line," Stoudemire said. "He played great tonight," Cartwright said of Rose. "He scored when he had to and passed when he was double-teamed. It was undoubtedly his best game of the year. We needed it." After Shawn Marion nailed a 3-pointer with 1.9 seconds left to get the Suns within 88-87, Rose answered with two from the stripe with 1.2 seconds remaining, and Stephon Marbury did not get off a 3-pointer from midcourt before the buzzer. "I knew Jalen would score despite that first half," Suns coach Frank Johnson said. "You're not going to keep a scorer like him down. You know that he will make plays." Stoudemire contributed 19 points and nine rebounds for the Suns. After tipping in his own missed jumper with 13 seconds left that got his team within 85-84, he missed the ensuing free throw, and Phoenix never tied Chicago thereafter. "Losing like that hurts," Stoudemire said. "I had a chance to tie it at the line and didn't. I wasn't concentrating. The rotation was good, but it just took a shooter's bounce and went off and they got the rebound." Marion collected 18 points and eight rebounds and Joe Johnson added 16 points for Phoenix. Marbury was held to seven points on 2-of-12 shooting. The Suns have lost 11 of 16 games to fall one-half game behind Houston for the eighth and final Western Conference playoff berth. "Right now we're a team that is in a funk," Frank Johnson said. "We're struggling and just need to find a way out of it." "Phoenix is a good team and they are fighting for a playoff spot," Cartwright said. "They played hard, they know what is at stake for them. I was just really proud of our guys tonight."
