Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Tracy McGrady scored 26 points and newly acquired rookies Drew Gooden and Gordan Giricek combined for 40 as the Orlando Magic ended the Dallas Mavericks' six-game winning streak with a 98-93 victory. The lead swung back and forth in the fourth quarter until McGrady's fast-break layup gave the Magic a 90-89 edge with 1:56 to go. Giricek sank a jumper and Darrell Armstrong made two free throws, increasing the lead to 94-89 with 18 seconds left. After Steve Nash's layup with 12.7 seconds remaining got Dallas within three, Giricek answered with two free throws to ice the victory. Giricek, acquired with Gooden from Memphis last week for Mike Miller and Ryan Humphrey, had 20 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Gooden collected 20 points and 10 boards for the Magic, who are riding a season-high four-game winning streak. "A great win against a very, very gifted basketball team," Magic coach Doc Rivers said. "To see .500 again is really nice. And we did it with defense." The Magic have climbed back to the break-even mark for the first time this month in impressive fashion. On Sunday, they posted a road victory over Atlantic Division-leading New Jersey. "I don't know what it is, I don't know if it's the trade, I can't tell you, but we've been playing up-tempo, playing with a lot of passion out there and we're believing now," McGrady said. Dirk Nowitzki scored 26 points and Nick Van Exel added 18 off the bench for the Mavericks, who have not won in Orlando since December 2, 1996. The Magic held usually high-scoring Dallas to 38 points in the second half. "We had numerous shots that we've been making all year, but for some reason we couldn't make them tonight," Mavericks coach Don Nelson said. "I liked the shots we took, but then again, you have to make them." After falling behind by as many as 10 points in the first half and trailing at the break, 55-49, the Magic came out firing in the third quarter. Giricek's 3-pointer with nine minutes left tied it at 57-57 before each team took the lead three times in the period. Orlando carried a 77-75 edge into the fourth quarter. Orlando drained 9-of-20 3-pointers as Giricek went 4-of-7 from beyond the arc. The Magic shot 45 percent (34-of-75) overall, made 21-of-26 free throws and held an impressive 41-27 bulge on the glass. After averaging 11.2 points for the Grizzlies, Giricek has totaled 50 points in three games with the Magic. "When I signed as a professional player, I signed on to make big shots," Giricek said. "If T-Mac passes me the ball,I have to make the shot." The Mavericks regained the lead in the fourth and took their biggest advantage at 83-79 on Walt Williams' jumper with 8:07 left. Orlando responded from long range as Pat Garrity and Armstrong nailed 3-pointers around a bucket by Dallas' Michael Finley. With 2:14 to play, Nash supplied the Mavs' final lead at 89-88 with a 14-footer, but McGrady drove the lane and elevated over the 7-foot Nowitzki for a lefthanded layup. Finley scored 17 points and Nash had 14 for the Mavericks, which shot 38 percent (16-of-42) from the field in the second half after firing away at a 56 percent (23-of-41) clip in the first 24 minutes. "When we went cold in the fourth, we have to make sure we get to the line and get some easy points," said Nowitzki, who attempted half of the Mavs' 10 free throws. "It's been a problem for us all year and we have to do a better job." Dallas used a 14-4 run to grab its largest lead of the game. A bucket by Evan Eschmeyer gave the Mavs a 42-32 cushion with 8:15 left in the first half. Mavericks forward Eduardo Najera was ejected in the second quarter for making contact with official David Jones during an argument. While gesturing wildly, Najera brushed Jones' left arm. "It was an accident, I got caught up in the moment," Najera said. "I accidentally hit him. It was a good call to eject me."
