Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- In case anyone forgot, the Los Angeles Lakers have Shaq, too. Shaquille O'Neal had 35 points and 14 rebounds to power the Lakers to their sixth straight victory, a 95-85 triumph over the slumping Detroit Pistons. The 7-2 O'Neal has been the NBA Finals MVP in each of the last three seasons. But injuries and the explosion of Kobe Bryant had relegated him to secondary status with the Lakers. With O'Neal sidelined, Bryant began a streak of 40-point games that continued after the superstar center returned. Bryant's streak ended at nine on Monday, when O'Neal scored 33 points to lead the Lakers over the crosstown Clippers. "I'm starting to get it back," O'Neal said. "I'm about the same - 75 percent. I think by March and April I will get better." "I know Shaq; he picks his spots sometimes, during the season and especially now," Bryant said. "He really tries to conserve himself for the playoffs or big games." In this one, O'Neal manhandled the smaller Pistons, making 14-of-24 shots and 7-of-8 free throws. He scored 17 points in the third quarter, then had three clutch baskets down the stretch to turn back a rally by Detroit. "It took me a while to get going," O'Neal said. "They were undersized and my teammates were looking for me. I started to make some shots." "It's the smart thing to do," said Lakers assistant Jim Cleamons, who again sat in for ailing coach Phil Jackson. "Make them defend the ball and Shaquille in the post and then we'll work off that. That's what we tried to do, anyway." Bryant scored 30 points for the surging Lakers, who have won 13 of their last 15 games. They have beaten the Pistons nine straight times since January 19, 1997. "We're playing very well," Bryant said. "We're getting solid contributions across the board." "Right now, we're playing pretty good, playing as a team, still winning games," O'Neal added. "Other teams should watch out." Corliss Williamson scored 19 points and Richard Hamilton added 18 for the Pistons, who fell to 0-3 on their five-game road trip and have lost a season-high five straight games. "When we go through stretches like this, we're not playing as bad as we feel like we're playing, and when we go through good stretches, we don't feel like we're playing as good as we're playing," guard Chauncey Billups said. "So we're somewhere in the middle." The smaller Pistons trailed just 46-41 at halftime and, despite a pair of dunks and a free throw by O'Neal, took a 57-55 lead on a 3-pointer by Billups with 7:25 left in the third period. Bryant answered with a three-point play that gave LA the lead for good before O'Neal asserted himself, scoring 10 straight Lakers' points. He had two free throws, a follow dunk, a pair of turnaround jumpers and another dunk for a 68-63 lead with 2:09 to go. O'Neal capped the quarter with a finger roll for a 75-69 lead. He also had seven rebounds in the period. "They weren't double-teaming very much, so I had the opportunities to take a couple more shots than I've been taking in the last couple of games," O'Neal said. "Usually, I don't take that many shots. I thought they were going to double a little bit more." "You're put in a position where you have to try and contain someone with such size that can move as well as he does," said Pistons forward Cliff Robinson, who gave away more than 100 pounds to O'Neal. The Pistons hung around and were within 83-80 after a layup by rookie Mehmet Okur with 6:26 remaining. Mark Madsen answered with a follow dunk before O'Neal again took total control. He threw in a hook for an 87-80 lead at the 5:11 mark and made a jumper a minute later. After a free throw by Williamson, O'Neal sank another turnaround jumper for a 91-81 advantage with 2:55 to play. Rick Fox scored 11 points for the Lakers, who shot 49 percent (36-of-74), including 6-of-9 from the arc. O'Neal helped LA to a 42-31 advantage on the boards. Robinson scored 15 points and Billups added 13 for the Pistons, who shot 42 percent (31-of-74), including 6-of-18 from 3-point range. Bryant got off to another quick start, scoring 11 points in the first quarter as the Lakers grabbed a 25-22 lead.
