Game Story

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Jason Williams atoned for a key turnover late in regulation by scoring 10 of his 18 points in overtime as the Memphis Grizzlies recovered for a 126-116 victory over the Miami Heat. Memphis, which led by as many as 21 points, shot just 4-of-12 from the field in the fourth quarter, while Miami used a 16-3 run late in the period to get back into the game. Eddie Jones scored 10 points in the spurt, starting things with a jumper with 6:53 left to pull the Heat within 95-82 and capping the run with a pair of free throws with 2:24 remaining to make it 98-96. A careless play by Williams allowed Miami to come within 102-101. Travis Best missed a 3-pointer with 20 seconds left, but rookie Caron Butler took the ball away from the Grizzlies playmaker and threw down a dunk with 14 seconds remaining. Wesley Person converted two free throws for Memphis, which pushed its advantage to 104-101. After a timeout, Jones missed a 3-pointer, but Brian Grant got the offensive rebound and passed to Butler, who drained a game-tying 3-pointer with two seconds left in regulation. "We were out there and we didn't want to get embarrassed," Butler said. "You have got to play hard, you have to play through it. My teammates kept finding me and helping me to get sweet shots, so I tried to make them." "The last shot I thought we defended perfectly," Memphis coach Hubie Brown said. "Brian got that ball and ran that ball back and it is easy to say that you have to stay with your people. When he got the rebound, Caron was right there and I give him a lot of credit for making that shot. You could fold in that situation and it is easy to fold, but we didn't." Williams helped the Grizzlies outscored the Heat, 22-12, in the extra session to record their third straight home victory. The 22 points are a team record in overtime for Memphis. "It would have been a shame if we had lost that game in overtime," said Grizzlies forward Shane Battier, who scored 16 points. "But we played well in stretches and you have got to give them credit, they made a nice run in the fourth quarter and luckily we got them in overtime and came out with a win." After Best's 20-foot jumper tied the game for the final time at 106-106 44 seconds into overtime, Williams nailed a 3-pointer with 3:57 left to ignite an 11-2 run that gave the Grizzlies a 117-108 advantage with less than a minute remaining. "As soon as we took that break, it was like we sort of exhaled and we didn't defend on three or four situations right at the beginning of the overtime," Heat coach Pat Riley said. "We let them get off." "It was nice to see us come back, but it takes so much energy to come back," Grant agreed said. "You have got to either sustain your level of play or go beyond that. We just had several breakdowns, and they were hitting their shots." Pau Gasol led Memphis with 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds while Person added 19 and 14 rebounds. Williams dished out 15 assists. Jones and Butler each scored 24 points and Grant contributed 19 and 13 rebounds before fouling out for the Heat, who have lost six straight road games. The Grizzlies used an 11-0 spurt to take a 37-26 lead with 1:50 left in the first quarter. They took their largest lead, 77-56, on Gasol's jumper with 6:49 to go in the third. Lorenzen Wright scored 14 points and Stromile Swift chipped in 12 off the bench for Memphis, which shot 54 percent (44-of-82), including going 9-of-17 (53 percent) from beyond the arc. "They shot the ball extremely well, and they're a great shooting team," Riley said. "I talked to our players about that, but they just picked us apart. We could score, but it was just that we couldn't stop them. Every single player on their team was hitting shots when they needed them. It wasn't just one guy." The Grizzlies had seven players score in double figures despite playing without their third straight game without newly acquired forward Mike Miller, who has back spasms. Best scored 18 points and Malik Allen tallied 11 as the Heat shot 48 percent (46-of-95) and surrendered 24 points on 16 turnovers.
