Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Michael Jordan played, but his teammates gave him plenty of time to rest his ailments. Jerry Stackhouse and Larry Hughes scored 20 points apiece to lead five players in double figures as the Washington Wizards rolled to a 99-80 rout of the struggling Los Angeles Clippers. Jordan, who has been bothered by an injured knee, was a game-time decision after leaving Tuesday's contest with back spasms. He was in the starting lineup and collected 10 points and nine rebounds in just 25 minutes as he was hardly needed in the second half of a blowout. "I wanted to go out there. I had a lot of people tell me not to because they felt it would damage my long-term value, but I don't have any long-term value," said Jordan, who will retire after this season. "I have 23 games left, I just want to play." "If Michael wants to play, Michael is going to play," Washington coach Doug Collins said. "The doctor talked to him before the game. He said 'Michael, there is a great chance that your back might spasm up again.' He said, 'Is it life-threatening? No? Then I'm going to play.'" Jordan left the game for good with 3:05 left in the third quarter and was clearly in discomfort on the bench. "It was very stiff, but I was able to get it loose," he said. "I wasn't going to try and do anything spectacular, I was just going to stick with the basics and be out there for support." "He gave us a needed lift," Stackhouse said. "Just having him in the lineup gave us confidence. Knowing that he is there, it helped us settle down out there. It meant a lot to have him on the floor." Brendan Haywood scored 12 of his 15 points in the first half as the Wizards jumped out to a 53-43 lead. Washington put away the game in the third quarter behind Hughes, who scored 12 points on 6-of-6 shooting. The Wizards had a 55-45 edge before reeling off 10 straight points. Stackhouse scored four points during the burst and Hughes had six, capping it with consecutive layups for a 20-point cushion with 6:12 to go. Stackhouse scored 10 points in the third as Washington outscored Los Angeles, 26-8. The Wizards made 9-of-16 shots while holding the Clippers to just 4-of-21 shooting. "We were bad in the third quarter and there was really no excuse," Los Angeles guard Eric Piatkowski said. "They knocked down shots and they were executing really well. We just did not knock anything down. Once they got that lead their confidence level got high and it was over." Washington took a 28-point lead into the fourth quarter and had its largest lead at 83-53 with 10:44 remaining. Christian Laettner collected 10 points and 13 rebounds and reserve Kwame Brown grabbed 11 boards as Washington held a commanding, 52-37 edge on the glass. Corey Maggette scored 14 points and Piatkowski added 11 for the Clippers, who have lost a season-high seven straight games and fell to 0-2 under interim coach Dennis Johnson. "Our confidence level is running at a lower level than preparation," Johnson said. "There is no question in my mind that we are prepared. We did not box out, we did not come to play aggressive and we let ourselves down because we did not play to our capabilities." Haywood scored 10 points in the first quarter, but the Wizards had just a 32-31 lead three minutes into the second. Stackhouse had a dunk and Laettner made three straight baskets for a 40-31 lead just 3:01 later. Los Angeles did not get closer the seven points thereafter. Washington made 7-of-8 free throws in the final four minutes to take a double-digit halftime lead.
