Game Story

NEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- The NBA's hottest team had little difficulty with the league's worst squad. Jamaal Magloire scored 20 points and Jamal Mashburn added 18, eight rebounds and seven assists as the New Orleans Hornets extended their season-high winning streak to eight games with a 102-76 triumph over the lowly Cleveland Cavaliers. It was the Hornets' biggest victory this season and eighth straight home triumph over the Cavaliers. "This was the kind of game that could be scary," Hornets coach Paul Silas said of the Cavs, who dropped their fifth straight game. "They had not won a game in a while. They can sneak up on you. But we played a solid game. Everybody played well." "(The Hornets) are a physical group of players," Cavs interim coach Keith Smart said. "The way that they play, they will absolutely take you out of your game and off the routes that you run. If you can't score and you turn the ball over enough to not give yourself an opportunity to score - against this team or any basketball team - you won't win." David Wesley chipped in 17 points for the Hornets, who had not won eight straight games since December 3-18, 1999. New Orleans is in sixth place in the Eastern Conference but just three games behind first-place Detroit and Indiana. "We've always been a team that got stonger at the end of the year," Mashburn said. "It's important for us to get ready for the playoffs. We're a veteran ballclub, and we understand what's at stake and what we have to do. This time of the year is the most important." "We didn't want to ever give them a chance that they had something to play for," Wesley said. "A win to them means nothing, but a loss to us is huge. We set a tone and sent a message early, and then kept it going in the second half." New Orleans led by just 9-8 before going on a 14-4 run that was capped by a tip from Wesley with 3 1/2 minutes left and gave the team a double-digit lead for good. The Hornets held a 31-17 advantage after one quarter, 61-44 at the half and 79-53 after three quarters. In the Cavs' final 10 possessions in the third quarter, they committed seven turnovers and went 0-for-3 from the field. "We are going to have those turnovers because we are an inexperienced basketball team," Smart said. "And against a good basketball team, we are going to have those problems." "Anybody in the NBA can beat anybody else," said Mashburn, whose team led by as many as 33 points early in the fourth quarter. "We took care of business and did what we had to do. At the end of the third quarter, I started telling the guys to prepare for New Jersey (on Sunday). You don't want to have any sloppy play that will carry over. You've got to be true to the game and finish it out." Rookie Carlos Boozer collected 16 points and 14 rebounds to pace Cleveland, which dropped its 12th consecutive road contest and 11th in 12 games overall. The Cavs have the league's worst record at 11-51 and are just 3-29 away from Gund Arena. "They played a terrific game," Boozer said. "They got a big lead in the first quarter, and we couldn't catch up." New Orleans handed out 30 assists and committed just 13 turnovers, while Cleveland had 16 assists and 23 turnovers. "We need to beat the top teams in the East and this was an opportunity to beat a team that is struggling," Wesley said. "This was a game we could keep the streak going on."
