Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- This was far from an ideal start to the Los Angeles Lakers' season-high six-game road trip. Jalen Rose scored 27 points and Jamal Crawford added a career-high 24 and 10 assists as the Chicago Bulls handed the Lakers just their second defeat in 11 games, 116-99. "This was Jamal's best game, by far," Bulls coach Bill Cartwright said. "He was solid. He handled the ball well. He shot the ball well (9-of-16). I thought for the most part, he guarded well. He did a terrific job." "(My confidence) is pretty high, but you cannot let your highs get too high," said Crawford, who has been starting in place of disgruntled rookie Jay Williams. "Tomorrow I could come down just that easy." "Baby Shaq" Eddy Curry scored 20 points - his third game in a row with at least 20 - and helped limit Shaquille O'Neal to a season-low 13 points as the Bulls beat the Lakers for the third time in four games over the last two seasons. "I just wanted to come out and match his physical presence out there," Curry said. "I really did not know what to expect. This is my first time playing against him at full strength, and I just wanted to come out and make a stand on my own." "Eddy is a good player, a 7-footer," O'Neal said. "Came in, played hard. He did a good job." The Bulls took the lead for good at 19-17 on a dunk by Curry with 5:35 left in the first quarter. They shot 55 percent (44-of-80) and limited the Lakers to 40 percent (36-of-89). "Their kids played really well," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "They played with the teamwork you need to win. They just need to know you have to play like that every night." Chicago was especially impressive from the arc, making a season-high 12-of-15 attempts, while Los Angeles sank 9-of-26. "I told the guys this is what we are capable of when we play together, we stay together, we guard and push the ball like we did tonight," Cartwright said. "For the most part I thought our guys were really focused and did a great job." Kobe Bryant scored 36 points and Rick Fox added a season-high 23 for the Lakers, who also face playoff-bound teams Detroit, Minnesota and Sacramento on their current trip. Los Angeles was beginning a 10-game stretch in which it plays nine road contests. "We ran into a really hot team tonight," Jackson said. "We just didn't match their energy at all. I guess I can write it off to the time zone changes as to why we're in the doldrums. What time is it now? Maybe we're just waking up." Despite 14 points, including four 3-pointers, from Fox, the Lakers trailed after one quarter, 35-27. Fox attempted eight shots from the arc in the period, the most by an opponent in a quarter in Bulls history. The Bulls led, 60-53, at the break and extended their advantage to 91-77 after three quarters. "It seems like every time we play them, they play like a team that should be in the playoffs," Bryant said. O'Neal, who appeared to be devoid of his normal energy and aggressiveness, made a season low-tying three shots on 11 attempts. "I don't know what caused it," Jackson said. "Shaq sometimes can be lethargic like that. Sometimes it is due to his scoring. If he's not scoring, the energy isn't there as it is when he's getting the ball." "I'm going to take the blame for that game," O'Neal said. "I had a slow night. I missed a lot of shots. I really didn't get into a rhythm."
