Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Glenn Robinson's clutch basket erased an embarrassing performance from his team at the other end of the floor. Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored a season-high 33 points and Robinson added 19, including a three-point play with three seconds left, as the surging Hawks posted a 107-104 victory over the New York Knicks. In a game that featured seven lead changes in the final 3 1/2 minutes, Atlanta seemed to have control after Jason Terry buried two free throws for a 104-101 lead with 17 seconds left. But the Hawks suffered a defensive collapse on the ensuing inbounds pass, allowing Latrell Sprewell to get wide open in the left corner for a game-tying 3-pointer. "At the timeout, Glenn said, 'I called switch,' and I guess they didn't switch to somebody else," Atlanta coach Terry Stotts said. "In an end of the game situation, you can't have a breakdown. I've never seen a guy come that open with a game on the line in my career. We didn't have a guy within 15 feet of him. I might have been (closest). Our best defense was sitting on the bench screaming at him." "We needed to make up for what happened," Robinson said. "We gave up an uncontested three. That play was over with. We were still in a position to win the ballgame. That play didn't kill us." The shot nearly erased an awful game for Sprewell, who made just 3-of-15 shots and was only 2-of-7 from the line. Robinson picked up his teammates in the closing seconds, sinking a jumper from the foul line as he was fouled by Charlie Ward. "It was a big shot," Robinson said. "We weren't going for a 3-pointer or a three-point play. We ran a pick-and-roll. And when I rolled, I was in perfect position. I was right in the paint. I got the ball and made a tough shot, because he did foul me." Robinson converted the free throw and Atlanta intentionally fouled Sprewell with one second remaining. Sprewell's struggles continued as he missed both free throws - the second intentionally - as New York lost for the eighth time in nine road games. "You have to put it behind you," said Sprewell, who had 10 rebounds. "You can't let stuff like that stick in your head. I still played hard and rebounded and defended the ball. I just didn't shoot well." "Pain is coming consistent now," Knicks coach Don Chaney said. "It's the little things, offensive rebounding, missed free throws, missed layups. At this point in the season, considering what we're playing for, there's no room for mistakes. Not that we're a great team, but you just can't afford to lose those types of games." Abdur-Rahim made 13-of-21 shots, including 2-of-2 3-pointers, and was 5-of-5 from the line. Atlanta shot 50 percent (37-of-74) overall and made 29-of-33 free throws, outscoring New York by 15 at the line. "I approach all my games the same," Abdur-Rahim said. "I don't go out there looking to score points or anything. I tried to pick my game up, especially down the stretch. The guys were looking for me." Robinson grabbed eight rebounds and Theo Ratliff collected nine points and 10 rebounds as the Hawks dominated inside with a 39-32 edge on the glass and a 48-24 advantage in points in the paint. Terry had 20 points and Dion Glover added 11 for the Hawks, who have won three straight games to match their longest winning streak of the season. Allan Houston led the Knicks with 28 points and Kurt Thomas added 26, nine rebounds and five blocks. Ward collected 15 points and nine assists off the bench. He made 5-of-6 3-pointers as New York made 12-of-22 shots from beyond the arc. Atlanta had an 88-83 lead with 8:19 remaining in the game before New York scored 10 straight points to move ahead. Houston scored eight points during the burst and capped it with a jumper for a 93-88 lead with 5:52 to go. The Knicks had a 95-90 lead less than a minute later, but Robinson sank a jumper shot and Abdur-Rahim made back-to-back basket to give the Hawks a one-point edge 3:25 remaining.
