Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- The stingy defense of the Detroit Pistons could not stop Paul Pierce. Pierce scored 33 points and Antoine Walker added 17 as the Boston Celtics snapped the Pistons' four-game winning streak with an 81-71 victory. Detroit allows a league-leading 86.5 points per game and held Boston more than 10 points below its average. But the Pistons could not handle Pierce, who is fifth in the NBA in scoring and had 10 points in the final 6 1/2 minutes. The Celtics led the entire second half, but the Pistons got within 67-65 with 7:48 remaining. Detroit scored just six points thereafter and watched Pierce manhandle Chauncey Billups. "They cut it to two and every team's going to make a run," Walker said. "But we stayed composed and made big baskets and continued to play defense, and that's something we're striving for as we try to finish the season up strong." After Walker made consecutive baskets to extend the lead, Pierce was fouled hard by Corliss Williamson while driving to the basket. Williamson was called for a flagrant foul and Pierce made the ensuing free throws. Boston maintained possession and Pierce buried a jumper for a 73-65 lead with 6:10 remaining. Pierce made an acrobatic layup with four minutes left and drove past Billups for a dunk 42 seconds later. He assisted on a jumper by Tony Battie and sealed the win with a jumper at the 77-second mark. Pierce also did a stellar job on Richard Hamilton, holding Detroit's leading scorer to eight points on 3-of-15 shooting. "I just tried to be physical with him, not really let him run around where he's good at coming off screens," Pierce said. "I just wanted to try to press up on him, be real physical and not give him any easy looks." "(Boston) did a great job of getting up into us and making their shots when they counted," Hamilton said. "I just never got into a rhythm. I missed a couple of shots early that I normally make and I think it is just one of those things that you go through during the season and you just have to keep shooting." The Celtics shot just 45 percent (30-of-67) overall but held the Pistons to 34 percent (26-of-76) on their home floor. "We beat a (heck) of a basketball team in the Pistons," Boston coach Jim O'Brien said. "I thought our defense was outstanding. I thought our guys really adhered to the game plan. We were lucky to escape out of here with a `W.'" Boston moved one-game ahead of sixth-place New Orleans in the Eastern Conference and is 3 1/2 games behind Detroit for the top spot. "Right now, we're in a tough stretch of the season for us," Walker said. "Every game is like a playoff game. Everybody's jockeying for playoff position. We knew it was going to be tough coming here playing against a Detroit team that's very good defensively." Billups scored 19 points and Jon Barry added 11 for the Pistons, who failed to complete an unbeaten five-game homestand and lost for just the second time in their last nine home games against the Celtics. "It was a hard-played game and Boston just played better," Detroit coach Rick Carlisle said. "We played hard but just not well enough to get over the hump. They played better." Ben Wallace recorded his third straight 20-rebound game with 21 and has 85 in his last four contests.
