Game Story

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Sunday afternoon's victory was record-setting for the Memphis Grizzlies and cathartic for Lorenzen Wright. Wright made an emotional return with 21 points and Pau Gasol and Shane Battier scored 22 apiece as the Memphis Grizzlies set five franchise records with a 124-92 rout of the Atlanta Hawks. Wright missed the last seven games due to the death of his 11-month-old daughter, Sierra. "I was very excited to get out there and play again in front of a crowd," he said. "It was good just get back out there and get in the flow of things. I didn't wanna come out there and rush. The biggest thing (coach Hubie Brown) told me about the game was, `Take your time, and let it come to you.' That's what I tried to do." Wright was greeted warmly when he entered with 3:27 left in the first quarter and again after shooting 8-of-12 from the field and grabbing eight rebounds in 24 minutes. "It was great," the 27-year-old center said. "Ever since I've been here, college until now, I've always said Memphis has the greatest fans. It really pumped me up to see the crowd giving me a standing ovation. I really appreciate everything they've done for me through this time I've been through." Wesley Person contributed 14 points and Stromile Swift added 12 and 16 rebounds as the Grizzlies won their franchise-best sixth straight game. Memphis took full advantage of its schedule as its winning streak came against opponents with losing records. "We're just going out there believing we can win," Swift said. "We feel more comfortable as a team. We told ourselves in the second half of the season, `We're going to be a better team.'" The Grizzlies also notched their 24th win, the most in their eighth-year history. They had won 23 games twice before - once in 2000-01, their final season in Vancouver, and again last season, their first in Memphis. "It feels good because we're playing well," said Battier, who set a career high in points. "It's a lot different from last year, obviously. It doesn't feel like we're just playing out the rest of the season. We're coming to play every night, looking to compete and play well. The last six games have been fun. It's a good brand of basketball." In addition, Memphis set team marks for double-figures scorers with eight and largest lead after the first quarter (18) and halftime (29). "I think the fact we got the 24th win is a testimony of how hard our players have worked," Brown added. "In this stretch of six wins, these are the teams you must beat if you are going to put together good win-loss records in the furture, and then set up when you have to go against the plus-.500 guys." Snapping a three-game slide to the Hawks, the Grizzlies scored the first 11 points and owned a 39-21 advantage after the first quarter. Their lead grew to 70-41 at intermission and they never trailed by less than 25 points in the second half. "The tone was set today by Wes Person in that first quarter by him getting 14 points on 6-of-7 (shooting)," Brown said. "The fact we were pushing the ball so hard was a major key in this game." That up-tempo style allowed Memphis to set a season high with 36 assists. "They just got that momentum going early," Atlanta coach Terry Stotts said. "We didn't do much to take away any of that momentum. Maybe if we got off to a better start and made some of those early jump shots the tone of the game would have been a little bit different." Glenn Robinson scored 23 points and former Grizzlie Shareef Abdur-Rahim and Jason Terry each had 20 for the Hawks, who had a three-game winning streak snapped. "It's hard to press on, but we have to bounce back," Robinson said. "We did the same thing to Chicago, so they're going to want to bounce back on us; we have our work cut out for us." Abdur-Rahim was impressed with his former team. "They delivered it," he said. "They jumped on us and built up their confidence. They deserved it. This is a much more talented team that playing a lot better basketball (than the teams he played on)." Atlanta shot 38.5 percent (35-of-91), missing all 10 of its 3-point attempts. The Hawks surrendered a season high in points and the highest field goal percentage (56.2 percent). Terry went 0-of-4 from 3-point range. "They got off to a good rhythm, and my shots just weren't going in," he said. "Defensively is where we ran into a problem. We didn't talk during transitions, we had communication problems. Offensively, we were fine." The Grizzlies also were perfect from the line (15-of-15) for the sixth time in team history, hit on 9-of-18 shots from the arc and grabbed a season-best 56 rebounds.
