Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Ricky Davis couldn't have ended a better game in worse fashion. Just missing his first career triple-double, Davis shot at the opposing basket in the closing seconds and took a hard foul for it as his Cleveland Cavaliers surprised the Utah Jazz, 122-95. Davis had 28 points, a career-high 12 assists and nine rebounds and Jumaine Jones added 23 points off the bench for the Cavaliers, who had six players in double figures and halted a seven-game losing streak. Davis fired a shot at Utah's basket in the closing seconds after taking the inbounds pass near the free-throw line. He was fouled hard by Jazz guard DeShawn Stevenson and made two free throws with two seconds left. "This is not schoolyard basketball. These guys are getting paid," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "I was glad DeShawn tried to knock him down." Stevenson agreed with his coach. "I have nothing against Ricky. It's about respect. Respect for the game," he said. "Ricky's like that. He's a wild person. I didn't try to hurt him. But I gave him a hard foul." Jones nailed a career-high six 3-pointers, missing only one in 25 minutes, while the Jazz were just 25 percent (3-of-12) from the arc. Jones was 0-of-8 from the floor in Tuesday's 77-75 loss to Miami. "I've got a soft spot for Jumaine," Cleveland interim coach Keith Smart said. "He's a guy that understands the role that he's in. He took it really personal when he missed so many open shots the last game." Milt Palacio contributed a career-high 20 points and reserve Chris Mihm added 19 as Cleveland shot a season-high 62 percent (50-of-83). The Cavaliers entered the game ranked 27th in the NBA in shooting percentage, making under 42 percent. "This game we played start to finish," Mihm said. "We had an 11-point lead at halftime and then came right out in the third quarter and kept building on it. Everyone that came in off the bench did a solid job. I was ready to go today. I like these day games. One o'clock games are all right by me." Matt Harpring and Tony Massenburg each scored 20 points to lead Utah, which finished a 2-3 road trip and dropped one-half game behind the idle Los Angeles Lakers for sixth place in the Western Conference. Karl Malone added 17 points and Andrei Kirilenko 13 off the bench for Utah, which had won its last four meetings with Cleveland. Backup guard Mark Jackson had five assists to bring his career total to 10,142, passing Magic Johnson for second place on the all-time list. Utah starting point guard John Stockton collected nine assists to bring his total to 15,678. "I'm extremely blessed to be able to hang around this long and to be in the position I'm in," Jackson said. "It's really unbelievable. It's one of my greatest accomplishments, if not the greatest on the basketball court. "A guy (Magic Johnson) that epitomizes the point guard position, a guy that I grew up trying to be like, a guy that I believe is the greatest point guard that ever played game, to surpass him is special to me because I know who he is, what he is and what he has meant to the game. So, it truly is an honor." Harpring and Massenburg each scored half their points in the first quarter, when the Jazz held a 28-27 edge. After getting the rebound of his only miss from the arc, Jones answered with a 3-pointer to give Cleveland a 42-38 lead with 5:26 left. Jones made a trio of the 3-pointers in the final 2:48 of the first half, when the Cavs closed with an 11-4 surge to take a 57-46 lead. Zydrunas Ilgauskas scored 10 of his 14 points in the third quarter, when the Cavs did not let the lead fall below 11 points. Utah got no closer than 17 in the fourth period.
