Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- Tim Duncan gave the San Antonio Spurs an even bigger scare than the Chicago Bulls did. Duncan collected 22 points and 12 rebounds before leaving the game with a right ankle sprain as the Spurs needed a late surge to pull away from the lowly Bulls, 108-97, for their sixth straight victory. Duncan, who is making a compelling case for his second straight NBA MVP award, turned his right ankle stepping on Bulls forward Donyell Marshall's right foot while fouled driving to the basket with 3:17 remaining and the Spurs ahead, 100-89. The All-Star power forward leaned on two teammates as he limped to the bench, then went to the locker room. Mengke Bateer, who had not attempted a foul shot this season, stepped to the line to shoot Duncan's free throws but missed both. X-rays taken on Duncan's ankle turned out negative. He will be given an MRI on Monday. "He has a sprained ankle," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "We won't know until tomorrow. He did it pretty good. He's walking gingerly." Tony Parker contributed 25 points and eight assists, Malik Rose added 19 points and Stephen Jackson 15 for the Spurs, who improved to 28-5 since the beginning of January. "Chicago always is a special game for me, because of the fact that my family and everyone is back home watching," said Parker, whose younger brother plays for Northwestern University in nearby Evanston. "I was glad I played well and did a great job tonight making things happen." "He really stepped up and hit some big shots tonight," Spurs forward Bruce Bowen said. "He has been solid all year, but really gave an extra effort down the stretch. He has really grown and matured this year." San Antonio, which beat Chicago for the eighth time in nine meetings, led by just 83-80 early the fourth quarter before Steve Kerr and Steve Smith made back-to-back 3-pointers to start an 11-1 run over the next 2 1/2 minutes. The Bulls got no closer than nine points thereafter. "We didn't shoot them well all night," said Popovich, whose team went 8-of-25 from the arc. "We found the opportuniity and stayed pretty persistent with it. We ended up finding some ways to score down the stretch." "Steve Kerr and Steve Smith hit some really big shots down the stretch and really opened up the game for us," Parker said. "You have to give a lot of credit to them, because they are such clutch shooters throughout their careers and they really gave us a lift tonight." With 15 seconds left, Bowen was pushed in the back by Jalen Rose as he made a layup. After no foul was called, Bowen committed a hard foul on Rose coming up the court four seconds later. Rose got in Bowen's face, and double technical fouls were called. "Jalen does some things during the course of the game whenever I play against them," Bowen said. "I felt like I went to dunk the ball and ended up on the floor because of something he did. I just gave him a hard foul just to say there's no need to do what he did." "I felt like he unnecessarily tried to trip me," Rose said. "It all just happened so fast, I don't really know for sure what happened. I don't really understand it at all. I don't consider him a dirty player. He laid the ball up and I just went to take the ball out of bounds. Like I said, it happened so fast I don't really understand what happened." After Rose, who scored 12 points on 4-of-24 shooting, missed his free throw, he walked toward San Antonio's bench and was ejected for continuing to yell at Bowen. Donyell Marshall scored 29 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Jamal Crawford added 21 points for the Bulls, whose league-worst road record fell to 3-33. "We didn't play late with the same kind of poise we had earlier on," Marshall said. "We played good defense at times but they got way too many offensive rebounds and starting hitting those threes from outside." The Bulls committed 24 turnovers, which the Spurs converted into 27 points. "Our ability to handle pressure and play with poise is something we need to work on," Bulls coach Cartwright said. With Duncan sidelined with early foul trouble, Chicago jumped out to an early lead, going up by as many as 28-19 on a 3-pointer by Rose with 2:14 left. But the Spurs scored the final seven points of the period and the first five of the second, taking the lead for good, 31-28, on a 3-pointer by Bowen. The Spurs led by as many as 59-44 before the Bulls scored the final three points of the half and climbed within 76-73 entering the fourth quarter. "(The Bulls) played really tough and really kept in it," Malik Rose said. "We did a great job of fighting through a lot of their runs tonight and Tony, Steve and Steve really stepped up tonight and made some great plays down the stretch. This was a good win for us, because we really had to supply a solid effort tonight."
