Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Thanks to Sam Cassell and Gary Payton, Milwaukee Bucks coach George Karl joined an elite club. Cassell and Payton combined to score 18 points in the fourth quarter, including the team's last 10, as the Bucks defeated the New Orleans Hornets, 93-85, to avoid a sweep in the home-and-home series. With the triumph - just the Bucks' second in seven games - Karl became the 14th coach in NBA history to win 700 games. It took him 1,195 contests. "I think as I get older I will enjoy it a little bit more," Karl said. "Seven hundred is for the summer and drinking beer. I owe a lot to the players who've played for me and the coaches who've coached with me." Milwaukee took the lead for good at 40-38 on a layup by Desmond Mason with 5:41 left in the second quarter. It was nursing a 69-64 lead two minutes into the fourth period before Cassell commenced a 10-2 run with two jumpers and a 3-pointer. After Michael Redd capped the burst with a 3-pointer with 6:53 remaining, the Hornets rallied within 83-78 on a 3-pointer by Baron Davis with 2:58 to play. But Cassell countered with consecutive jump shots, and New Orleans got no closer than six points in the final two minutes. "Late in the fourth, George drew up some plays for me and I hit shots," said Cassell, who shot 9-of-15. "It isn't easy hitting shots over taller defenders but tonight it went down for me. Some nights those shots go down and some they don't. Fortunately, they went down for me tonight because my team needed the win." "Sam played extremely well," Hornets forward Jamal Mashburn said. "I know what kind of player he is because I played with him in Dallas (during the 1996-97 season)." Davis scored 20 points, Mashburn added 18 and P.J. Brown 13 with 15 rebounds for the Hornets, who had won 12 of their previous 15 games, including a 113-98 triumph over the Bucks on Friday. "Our size is a problem for most people, but we just didn't seem to have our legs tonight," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "They had more energy and needed the ballgame, and they took it." "Sam and Gary came in and hit some shots down the stretch for them," Hornets forward George Lynch said. "We tried to get close, and they just had more energy than they had last night." Milwaukee moved one game ahead of Washington for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. New Orleans is fifth, 1 1/2 games behind Philadelphia and Indiana and one game in front of sixth-place Boston. "It was a big win for us coming off of last night's loss," Karl said. "We were a little bit embarrassed with our performance in New Orleans. It was important for us to come out tonight and play well. I thought we won this game because of our defense." The Bucks shot 49 percent (37-of-76) and limited the Hornets to 41 percent (34-of-84). New Orleans jumped out to a 20-9 lead midway through the first quarter before Milwaukee rallied to within 29-25 by the end of the period. The Bucks took a 49-46 edge into halftime and a 64-61 lead into the fourth quarter. "When you are trying to make a run and catch up, you can't afford to turn the ball over and we did it entirely too many times," said Silas, whose team committed 21 turnovers. "Sam got on a roll making everything, then Gary picks up all the slack. Just one of those nights." Before the game, the Bucks activated 7-1 center Joel Przybilla, who had missed 31 games with a sore left ankle. He had three points and six rebounds in 34 minutes. "In general, Joel was the guy who played great for us," Karl said. "We've been missing someone to come off the bench to spell Ervin (Johnson) and (Anthony Mason) down low. Joel can provide that presence." "Joel will be a key for us down the stretch," Cassell said. "He's a legitimate shot-blocker down there. If he can put together games like he had tonight consistently, he will help us tremendously."
