Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Jason Kidd had a surprisingly unhappy birthday. On his 30th birthday, Kidd had 21 points, six rebounds and eight assists but made some crucial mistakes down the stretch as the New Jersey Nets suffered another shocking loss to the league-worst Cleveland Cavaliers, 93-88. "I'm disappointed we couldn't come in here and get a win," Kidd said. "We get up for the big games. We have to answer that problem because we've got a ton of teams coming up who are below .500." With the Nets trailing, 89-87, Kidd drove the lane for a potential tying layup but lost control of his dribble and let the ball go out of bounds with 15 second left. After rookie Smush Parker hit a pair of free throws at the other end to give Cleveland a four-point lead, Kidd drew a foul. He made the first and missed the second, then ran down the rebound and rushed to the left corner to attempt a 3-pointer. With 6-10 Darius Miles in his face, the 6-4 Kidd did not get a good look, and his shot fell well short of the basket with 3.7 seconds left. Jumaine Jones got the rebound, sealing Cleveland's 13th victory of the season. On February 25, the Cavaliers edged the Nets, 93-90, at Gund Arena. New Jersey joined Toronto and the Los Angeles Clippers as the only teams to lose twice to Cleveland this season. "This is still not us," Nets coach Byron Scott said. "We're a better basketball team. (But) if you play without consistency in the postseason, you'll be out in the first round." Zydrunas Ilgauskas scored 29 points to lead Cleveland. Parker had six of his 15 in the fourth quarter, including a pair of schoolyard-style layups early in the period. "I just went out there to play basketball and a lot of the teams we face right now need these wins to keep their spot in the playoffs," Parker said. "For us, these last games are our playoff season and we just have to go out there and make it tough for these guys." Parker had seven assists and shot 5-of-9 from the field. His contribution was important as Cavs leading scorer Ricky Davis had only four points and committed seven turnovers. The Cavaliers shot 57 percent (40-of-70) from the field but helped the Nets back into the game by committing 24 turnovers. "We were hoping we could gut it out," Nets guard Kerry Kittles said. Kenyon Martin scored 11 of his 18 points in the first quarter for the Nets. New Jersey fell 2 1/2 games behind the Detroit Pistons atop the Eastern Conference. The Nets are still in first place in the Atlantic Division, but their lead over the Philadelphia 76ers was cut to just one-half game. Cleveland is at the other end of the standings, racing for ping-pong balls in the draft lottery. The Cavs have the worst record in the league, 1 1/2 games behind the Denver Nuggets. "I've been around them for a while, and they don't give me any indication that they're quitting," Cleveland coach Keith Smart said. The Cavaliers have won back-to-back home games for the first time since December 11-14 against Toronto and Denver. Cleveland's last home game before this one was a 122-95 win over Utah one week ago. "Guys came out strong today and against Utah," Ilgauskas said. "They don't give up, that's the most important thing." Cleveland has collected 10 of its 13 wins this season at home.
