Game Story

TORONTO (Ticker) -- While LeBron James strutted his stuff at Gund Arena, the Cleveland Cavaliers put on another dreadful road performance. Shooting 38 percent from the field and committing 23 turnovers, the Cavaliers lost on the road for the 16th straight time, falling to the Toronto Raptors, 89-83, in a matchup of two lottery-bound teams. The prize in the NBA lottery will be James, the Ohio high school star who had 27 points, seven rebounds and seven assists Wednesday night in the McDonald's All-American Game, which was played on Cleveland's home court. The Cavaliers (14-57) own the NBA's worst record, although they were coming off back-to-back wins for the first time this season. Their last road victory was in Seattle on January 12, and the Cavs even won here on January 3. But on Wednesday, Cleveland resembled a team in desperate need of James. The Cavs shot just 32 percent and committed 14 turnovers in the first half, when they fell behind, 42-34. "We average 18 turnovers, so to have that many in the first half is too much," Cavaliers coach Keith Smart said. "But you're going to have that when you have a young ballclub. You're going to lose the basketball at times, but you can't have careless turnovers like we did." Cleveland pulled within 49-47 on a basket by Zydrunas Ilgauskas with 6:37 left in the third quarter, but Morris Peterson scored 10 points to spark a 22-6 run for the Raptors. A jumper by Voshon Lenard with 11:25 left in the fourth quarter capped the run, giving Toronto its biggest lead at 71-53. The Cavs had a late 15-2 run and closed to 88-83 on a jumper in the lane by rookie Carlos Boozer with 29 seconds left. But after Alvin Williams hit 1-of-2 free throws for Toronto with 27 seconds remaining, Milt Palacios missed a 3-pointer with 13 seconds left and Vince Carter dribbled out the clock. Peterson led Toronto with 21 points and Carter added 18, including 16 in the first half. "We played real well for 43 minutes and for the last five minutes, we didn't play well at all," Peterson said. "I don't think we will let that five minutes spoil it, but at the same time the coach talked about having that killer instinct and being able to finish the game off well." Ilgauskas finished with 25 points and nine rebounds, but the Cavs received little from Ricky Davis and Darius Miles, who combined to shoot 8-of-23 from the field. Smart kept Davis on the bench for most of the second half. "That's who he (Smart) went with," Davis said when asked why he barely played in the second half. Miles and teammate Jumaine Jones were also arguing with each other on the floor late in the third quarter. "Anytime you lose, losing does that to a team," Smart said. "Anytime you lose, you're going to have frustration. This is a competitive environment that we work in and play in and these guys want to win. When you don't win, you're going to have guys get upset." The Cavs only hope LeBron can be part of the solution.
