Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Allen Iverson made up for the worst game he's ever played. Iverson had 38 points, nine assists and eight steals as the Philadelphia 76ers cruised to a 110-89 rout of the Atlanta Hawks. After scoring 13 points on 6-of-28 shooting in a loss here on December 21, Iverson called it the "worst game I've ever played." Three months later, Iverson atoned for that effort. He made 17-of-25 shots from the field, falling three points shy of matching his season high as the Sixers defeated the Hawks for the first time in four tries this season. Iverson wasn't thinking of his earlier effort. "No, because I played a worse one in Detroit than that," he said. "I didn't even think of that. I was just trying to play basketball." Iverson scored 24 points on 11-of-17 shooting in the first half, helping the Sixers build a 56-42 lead. They were in control the rest of the way, leading by as many as 30 points. "How many times did they beat us? I felt good about our chances in this one," Iverson said. "We didn't want them to sweep us." "After they handled us the way they have all year, this is a great win," Sixers coach Larry Brown added. "Everybody contributed. We did a lot of great things. They've owned us. This is the first time we've defended them." Kenny Thomas added 18 points and 11 rebounds for Philadelphia (43-29), which remained 1 1/2 games behind first-place New Jersey (45-28) in the Atlantic Division. Glenn Robinson returned to the lineup after missing a game with a sore Achilles tendon and scored 16 points to lead Atlanta, which has lost three straight and six of its last eight contests. "We just didn't execute," Hawks guard Jason Terry said. "Tonight we came out and didn't play as hard as we should have. We were a little a distracted. We can't allow that to happen. We weren't all playing on the same page. We weren't out there executing defensively or offensively. We just didn't have it tonight ... distracted, unfocused, not there." A jumper by Ira Newble had the Hawks within 28-22 early in the second quarter before the Sixers took control with a 17-4 run. Iverson scored eight points in the burst, capping it with a pass to Keith Van Horn for an alley-oop dunk that provided a 40-26 advantage with 6:46 left before intermission. The Sixers made all five of their shots from the field during the run. Iverson continued to have his way, doing almost all his scoring from outside. He betted his club's final six points of the half and had 18 in the second quarter. "I was just hitting jumpers," Iverson said. "The basket looked like an ocean. Everything that I let go felt like it was going in. I was taking whatever they gave me." Greg Buckner and Monty Williams each added 10 points for the Sixers, who shot 55 percent (26-of-47) in the first half. They finished at 55 percent (48-of-87) and held a 43-38 rebounding advantage. The Hawks tried to get back in it, pulling within 65-55 with 7:09 left in the third quarter on Terry's layup. But the Sixers regrouped quickly. Tyrone Hill, who had 12 points and seven rebounds, made a layup to trigger a 14-6 burst that Williams capped with a layup for a 79-61 lead with 2:36 to play in the third quarter. Philadelphia had a 16-point lead after three quarters and enjoyed its biggest margin at 104-74 with 3:43 remaining following a basket by Buckner. Shareef Abdur-Rahim added 15 points and Terry and Theo Ratliff each had 10 for the Hawks, who shot 42 percent (35-of-84) and committed 17 turnovers.
