Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- The Chicago Bulls have become a formidable team at home, but they are still not good enough to stay with the Sacramento Kings for 48 minutes. Peja Stojakovic scored 19 of his 27 points in the third quarter as the Kings shook off a slow start to rout the Bulls, 107-92, for their sixth straight victory. "I thought after the first quarter we picked it up defensively," Sacramento coach Rick Adelman said. "We were active and moved the ball. Our second unit got out there and got us energized. They turned the game around at the start of the second quarter." Beginning a six-game road trip, Sacramento pulled within 2 1/2 games of idle Dallas in the battle for the NBA's best record. Held to three points in the first half, Stojakovic made 7-of-10 shots in the third period and finished 10-of-17 from the field. "The guys tracking Peja were up on him and not aware of his backcuts," Kings forward Chris Webber said. "He got about 12 easy points on backcutting hard. It was a focal point for our team. He's got a beautiful stroke. I'm gald to be on this team and see it every night." Webber scored 21 points and Mike Bibby added 16 for the Kings, who led by as many as 23 in the fourth quarter. "They have a young, energetic team who is well-coached," Webber said. "So, you just have to wear them down. And, we were able to to do that with our talent and effort." Coming off an embarrassing 140-89 drubbing at Indiana on Friday, the Bulls raced to a surprising 32-22 lead after one period. But the Kings got their wakeup call in the second quarter, turning the 10-point deficit into a 53-50 halftime lead before taking control in the third quarter. The loss snapped a four-game home winning streak for the Bulls, who dropped to 23-13 at the United Center. Chicago is just 3-35 on the road. Eddy Curry scored 24 points and Jamal Crawford added 18 for the Bulls, who ended the game with an 8-0 run. "We feel this is a game we could have won," Curry said. "We stayed with them in the first half, but we could not sustain the runs." "They are such a good team that once you have a lapse, they are able to take advantage," Chicago guard Jalen Rose added. The Kings opened the second quarter with six straight points, closing to 32-28 on Bibby's two free throws with 10:15 left in the first half. Chicago worked its advantage back up to eight, but the Kings took the lead, 51-50, on Stojakovic's jumper with 17 seconds left before the break. "This was a great win for us starting out a six-game road trip," Adelman said. "We will find out this trip if we're ready for the playoffs." The Bulls briefly regained the lead in the third quarter, 62-61, on Curry's dunk with 7:39 left. But Doug Christie answered with a 3-pointer that gave the Kings the lead for good and started a 14-6 spurt to end the third. "You get down to a good team like the Kings, who can really score the basketball, it's tough to catch them," Bulls coach Bill Cartwright said. "They have 10 guys to throw at you. Our guys got a little fatigued and in foul trouble." Scot Pollard contributed 11 points and Christie added 10 for the Kings, who shot 43 percent from the field (41-of-96) while holding the Bulls to 39 percent (37-of-94). "We know we lost here last year," Webber said. "We feel we're a better team, so our comeback was more about getting back on defense, not letting them run and get as deep in the paint."
